Bernie's OK so don't worry, but.......

Bernie had a heart attack last night. But he's going to be ok. I've come home briefly to get a few things straight and let him sleep in ICU. What a frightening night. We were really lucky. He was insisting, as you know he would, that he'd be ok, he just needed oxygen. But he was perspiring and his chest began to hurt (all this happened in about 10 minutes). So I called 911. We got him there barely in time. They just had him on the bed thing in the Emergency Room when he had a cardiac arrest. Alarms went off and everybody dropped everything and went into action. I'm afraid I went slightly hysterical (not a really bad one, but hysterical none the less) and the admissions lady who had just arrived on the scene scooped me up into her ample arms and showed me the waiting room. But they soon came to tell me that they "got him back" right away.

They then did an angiogram and found a blockage in his left or right artery. And they put in a stint. So he's clear for now. But on Monday they'll go back into the other artery and put stints in three other blockages that they found in the other artery. But for now he's resting comfortably in the ICU. The Doc said no calls or visitors for the next two days for sure. So Everyone communicate through me and I'll keep you posted the best I can.

It's ironic that he told me this morning (last night), when I came home from Texas from a delayed flight at 4 A.M., "come out with me on the balcony while I have my last cigarette. He was wearing a patch. So I have the empty box of Marlboros on my desk and he'll smoke another one over my dead body!

Lola--

Sometimes life is one damn thing after another. Fortunately, you were home and you were firm and the ER folks knew what they were doing.

Don't worry about your mild hysteria--after all, there wasn't anything else you could do and you are not a person to sit idly during crisis.

Hold your dominion.

Lola, I'm so shocked and saddened to hear that Blatham has been acting up. He's too young for this kind of nonsense. You are too young to have to put up with it. I'm really pissed that this might slow down his progress on the book he's writing. How can I brag about knowing a famous author if he poops out on me?

The only wake I want to have for Blatham is for his god damn smoking habit that will kill him if he doesn't quit!

Now seriously, the hospital staff with take care of Blatham. You are the only one who can take care of yourself. I know all of the many A2Kers who love Blatham are pulling for him---and for you.

Love,
BBB

Well, I'll have to say one more thing. I actually had to leave him in his room in the ICU sooner than the doctor told me I could stay because Bernie was making so many jokes (morphine makes it worse). We were feeling very happy that he didn't leave and so I had to let him get some rest. He was joking, I want you to know, when they brought him in, as sick as he was, and all the way through the ordeal. I hope I can remember some of his excellent zingers later when I have time to think.

Bernie's incorriagble and that's part of what I love so about him.

Lola, you need to get your rest too. Bernie will probably be a grumpy old curmudgeon when he gets back home.

Quick, don't forget those jokes!

I always thought "Incorrigable" was Bernie's middle name.

Do tell Mr. Mountie that Sergeant Preston certainly cannot do it all on his own, and he at least owes it him to get on his feet as soon as possible, so that he may return to "getting his man" . . .

Oh, my! Sorry to hear that, but glad he will be okay.

Please let Blatham know Bear and I are pulling for him.

Um, as far as the morphine... PLEASE do not let him rip out IV's and wander the halls naked harrassing the nurses.

Or, sing...

Or, any number of other things Bear did under the influence of drugs recently.

Oh, never mind. Let him do what the drugs tell him to do and by all means, write them down. (Here) Laughing

Hang in there.

Rather heavily shocked, I'm glad that this bad news was follwed so quickly by a good outcome (as it seems).

All the very best for both of you!

I'm going back to the hospital now and I'll print out these responses for Bernie. I'll do that every time I get a chance to check so write whatever you like to the evil little smoking man. I'm sure he'll love to hear from everyone.

As for chasing the nurses.........I told him he better behave and do as he's told. And he actually agreed with me. So we have a little control for now.
