How does a tempering valve work? We got a new unit of the hot water system and they advise us to install a tempering valve

@poetadams,
A tempering valve adjusts the mix of cold and hot water so that the hot water coming out of the tap won't scald a person. While you can adjust the mix yourself without the valve (if it's a single spout) it's much safer to have all the domestic hot water at a sub-scalding temperature, around 120ยบ.
