Little blue check mark boxes at the top of Facebook - what are they for?

A few weeks ago I noticed two tiny blue boxes that were checked. They are placed in awkward positions at he top of the facebook site. The one on the left can't be unchecked. The one on the right can be checked or unchecked, but it doesn't seem to do anything when I check/uncheck it. I posted on my news feed to see if any of my friends knows what they are for, but nobody replied. Does anyone know what these are for?
