I'll sometimes quit following one of my own threads when it gets too off topic, or weird, or whatever. Later I'll go back and check it and be embarrassed to find that someone has posted something relavent that I'm sure they think I ignored.

Then I'll post a reply and get ignored.

Maybe we need an "I'm leaving now - the thread is closed" option!

I feel like a dunce when I start a thread, a bunch of people looks at it, then no one posts.

That's the worst... starting and killing the thread simultaneously!

Wait... maybe the worst are the threads that just won't die....

Did a quick survey of 20 pages from the "My posts" (or whatever it is, the "egosearch") display. Killed 11.57% of the threads there. Not quite one in eight.

The few that I've started -- well, I kill pretty much all of those -- and quickly, too.

32% is probably going to be the record. One spin you can put on it is that your killer post was so damn good that folks slumped back, threw up their hands, and said to themselves "That was so profound that there is nothing more to say."
I am 35 for 388 which works out to 9%. In my defense, I hang out in the Creative Writing thread, which has a high mortality rate.
(Pragmatic, check out my posts over the last few days regarding the relationship of the Chinese yuan to the US dollar. I am pretty proud of my contribution to that less that rollicking thread. You can probably kill that one).

Okey dokey. I looked up four sequential pages from July 2004. You do that, if you don't know, by going to My Posts, clicking on page 2, looking at the url, and then changing the number at the end, where there is a t=.....
In my case I changed it to 2000.
So - I could be pretty sure those threads are quite dead, in contrast to more recent ones.

I got totals of 7/50, 16/50, 9/50, 6/50. A gobsmacking 19%.
Killer Osso.

Nice try, patiodog.

Actually, I find this thread empowering. Before, I thought killing a thread was a bad thing, something to feel sheepish about. Now I think it's cool!

It'll be interesting to see how this thread dies, actually. Will it take days or weeks, as one after another poster bails out the previous?

Or will it die suddenly, perhaps even prematurely, as we all sense a coming decline and refrain from posting for fear of being the one stuck with the hot potato?
