Material girl.....hello. Copyrighting at the Library of Congress does cost, but it is not expensive. Google it and learn from them directly. It is a safe site. Well, as safe as our government is at present.
A temporary copyright is one that has a dated means unable to be tampered with. This is getting more and more difficult to prove in any court of law, so a registered copyright from LOC is the best thing to have when exposing your work publicly. When registering my books, I take a day off from work and drive to Washington, DC and have a registration effective instantly while waiting for the official registration number. If unable to do it personally, US mail is the other route.
Remember, just because you have said it, written it, and typed it, does not make is safe or uniquely yours if someone else beats you to the copyright.
