Why is the Taliban winning in Afghanistan?

Because the people want the Taliban?

Because the Taliban kills anyone who opposes them? Why can't the people kill the Taliban?

The U.S. has given the Afghans tremendous help in fighting the Taliban. The Taliban does receive aid from anyone. Why does the Taliban win?

@gollum,
Afghanistan has always been problematic, neither the British nor the Russians could hold it for long.

The Western intervention was flawed from the beginning. Bush refused Russian help and deliberately antagonised Iran.

Despite that there was a brief period at the beginning when the Afghanis could have been won over but instead of focusing on jobs and infrastructure Bush decided to illegally invade Iraq.

The Taliban were not going anywhere, the Afghanis knew that.

And the Gulf money that supported Al Qaida and the Taliban is still there.

@izzythepush,
Yep. Just as I predicted to my brothers when it was beginning and they were all gung ho. When they get in that part of the world they don't know what they are doing. And, they likely will never pacify that place.

@edgarblythe,
It could have been done, but once the focus changed to Iraq the whole enterprise was doomed.

The worst thing about it was the squandered opportunity for a rapprochement with Iran. The Iranians, being Shia Muslims were not on good terms with the Sunni Taliban and could have been very useful allies. UK Foreign Secretary Jack Straw had just made a visit there to sound them out, and all was looking well.

Then fuckwit Dubya made his axis of evil speech.

Because that coward Joe Biden is pulling out of the country.

It's the same reason why South Vietnam fell. Progressives suck.

We had it pacified. All we needed to do is not turn tail and run for no reason.

Standing up for what is right is a bit too much for the likes of Joe Biden however.

The whole enterprise was succeeding before Mr. Biden decided to cut and run.

@oralloy,
Trump was the one who decided to cut and run.

Bush fucked up right at the beginning.

Just because Mr. Trump has a bad idea, that doesn't mean that Mr. Biden needs to follow through with it.

Probably. But it was far from a fatal error. We were on a path to eventual victory until we suddenly withdrew.
