Will our media pass the test?

I was entertaining myself with a daydream about how blissful it will be, when Donald Trump is no longer the first, last and only story the media is eating up and barfing out 24/7. It brought a peaceful feeling - a relaxing of muscles held unconsciously tense for so long; an exhaling after holding breath for too long.
It is something I look forward to. To begin to remember again which way is up.

Then it occurred to me: What if the media doesn’t get the memo about how ready we are to move on from the perpetual tweet-outrage-analysis cycle we’ve been on for close to five years? What if this coming January is like a testing period for the media - that test being can media give up the ratings they get from suckling at the tweet teat? Can they let Trump recede to the background, and stop covering his every errant vile utterance?

I’ve already seen some stories with a headline sort of like “can we get over our Trump news addiction?” Those stories all seem to put the burden on the news- consuming public at large; that is to say “Hey, if they demand it, we have no choice but to report it.” But I think it rests squarely on choices made by the editors and CEOs. It will become kind of a test of journalistic integrity, because they will no longer have the easy excuse of “We HAVE to cover his every waking thought, because he’s the president!”

What do you think - will media pass that test?

@snood,
Are you kidding?

I want Trump news. I want to hear about the divorce, the investigations on business fraud, the sentencing. When Trump gets covid again... I will eat that **** up.

The News is there to entertain me so I will watch advertisements. If I am not entertained, then I won't watch and they won't be able to get advertisers to pay them.

That is the only test.

@maxdancona,
No, I’m not kidding. Do you have enough humility to acknowledge that everyone doesn’t want to keep watching the Trump drama? That some people (and my guess is that it’s a lot ) would like turn the image on the lousy sonofabitch?

@snood,
Unfortunately, I have a sinking feeling that the media will continue gobbling up Trump happenings. He, his antics and cohorts have been a financial boon for all of them.

Back a few years as Trump came to announce his candidacy, the media gave him more time and attention than almost anyone else since the dawn of time (or at least since the first cave drawing).

He had been a headline stealer for decades. The top execs all knew this and knew he was manna for their bottom line.

As the nation takes in the election loss, millions are still enamored of and with him. The media will continue eating this up. Interviewing these folks. Finding out how they are "coping" and "surviving" in the world without their dithering buffoon steering the ship (mostly into the rocky waters. Deeper and deeper!).

They gave him center stage during both campaigns. Barely muttering about his past disasters. His multiple bankruptcies, affairs, racist actions... the list goes on. Other candidates had to fight through just to get a few paragraphs or seconds of air time to state their goals.

The sorry s.o.b.s passing themselves off as journalists are not anywhere near to abandonment of their golden goose! It matters not to them that the gold is not even as good as an imitated image of the real thing.

They will be clamoring for his take on President Biden's handling of the economy, the health crisis and everything else. Yes, even when and if (or if and when), Trump is put in chains and on a bus off to maximum security prison!

I would like to be more upbeat about this; yet, having watched the media devolve and dissolve for at least forty years, my faith in them is nil.

Huh?

Why don't you just turn it off then?

I assume your TV has an off button and a channel selector thingy. And you computer has a search function, you can watch whatever you like. Have you found porn yet (Trump is surprisingly absent from most porn content)?

I don't get what your problem is.

So anyway...
What do the rest of you think? Will there be any conscious effort on the part of the MSM to stop broadcasting every Trump tweet pearl of wisdom, once he’s out of power?

Or will it still be all Trump, all the time?

@snood,
Im gonna agree with Max. Schadenfreude over someone who richly eserves all the suffering that hell can deliver is well worth a by line or three.
I loved the NYT and its amateur and professional Op -eds about our porcine ex-ecutive.

Melania will be in a line of creditors (or will she be half responsible for payouts to those Trump has bilked).

I love stories about con-men capers and how they get caught.
Ya cant make this **** up.

Yeah (sigh) I’m afraid this is the ugly truth. Les Moonves said it, way back in 2016: “It may not be good for America, but it’s sure good for CBS.”

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/leslie-moonves-donald-trump-may-871464

And it is bad for America. The eroding of helpful norms and traditions. The The promotion of anti-science, and even anti-truth. This was the introduction of alternative facts; of a leader who preached that we shouldn’t believe our eyes and ears, that the news media was the enemy, that bad was good and wrong was right.

I think you’re right, but I’ll still hold out hope that, because he isn’t in power, maybe they will hang on his every stupid word just a little less.

@farmerman,
Now, if the stories are about how the hounds of justice are dogging his every step, now those are some stories that will get my rapt attention as well!

@snood,
He will fade away but its gonna take a while to wash off all the crud and offal hes dumped on our Republic.

His lies are more and more panic driven . Hell, He has totally washed his hands of displaying anything close to leadership during this time of pandemic. All he talks about is this one man's make believe claim to winning a presidential election for which he is the one attempting to destroy it.

Evil deserves punishment and Ive lived four yers with this clown in office and one year during which our lives have been put on total hold.

@farmerman,
The only Trump news I am interested in is when he has a massive heart attack and expires.

@glitterbag,
I'd rather see him in jail. I wonder if they will be able to accommodate his Secret Service detail.

Well it will be cheaper than what Trump charges us taxpayers to stay at his vulgar resorts.

@glitterbag,
I would love to see him get crushed under the rubble as the wall collapses. My daughter thinks it would be funnier if he dies after injecting bleach.

Any of these eventualities would be newsworthy.
