The Netherlands has been gripped by the issue of a missing Puma for weeks now, I hear ...

This was from 15 June, just after the story broke (my translation):

Quote:
Puma on the loose sighted again near Ede

EDE - The puma that's on the loose near Ede, which police, defence troops and hunt guards have been looking for the past 24 hours, has been sighted several times on Wednesday. So said a spokesperson for the police. [..]

The police does not want to divulge the exact place of the sightings to prevent that the public goes there en masse. Sightseeers wednesday massively ignored the police advice to stay away. The police was strongly bothered by the visitors. Because of that, large areas of the Ginkelse Heather were closed off on Wednesday morning with fences [..]

'We are simply tremendously bothered by sightseeers for two reasons. In the first place it is simply dangerous to now enter this area. When the puma encounters people, he will attack, according to experts. In the second place, there are hunters hidden everywhere, who have to decide in a fraction of a second whether to shoot when the animal comes into sight. [..]"

And this is from last Friday's Radio Netherlands Press Review:

Quote:
PUMA HUNTING

While the Japanese hunt whales, the Dutch are out hunting a puma, a large beast of prey that somehow got out and is running free in one of our national parks. As anyone who reads the Dutch press knows, the hunt for the puma has turned into a national hype that has been building up for two weeks now.

According to today's Volkskrant, the 'puma', may in fact be a panther. But this revelation comes a bit late, because the Dutch public has already given its favourite cat a name: Winnie The Pooh-ma.

Puma supports search for puma
ANP

APELDOORN - Sports brand Puma has made a donation to the Pantera Foundation [a reception center for big cats in Europe that has apparently launched its own search effort] to help it continue its search. 'We are not looking for a pat on the back. But we would be sad if the puma, panther or jackal would be shot', says director Peter Korver of Puma.

He prefers the cautious search of Pantera over the weapons clatter the police used at first to eliminate the sighted predator. [..] He will not say how big the donation was. But it is enough, according to him, to continue Pantera's search.

Pantera is not excluding the possibility that a second puma is traversing the Veluwe forest. [..] Pantera was sent a photo of a blonde version of the predator. But Pantera does not know whether it really was taken on the Veluwe. According to others the photo is from a Brazilian website.

Here's the Pantera site, with big news on "Winnie de Poema" ...

When escaped big cats are publicized in PA the public arrives bearing gifts--hot dogs or beef roasts depending on the animal lover's budget.

Winnie was a hedonistic dork. Take it from someone who would know.

I love this news item too, from when the story was still more fresh, and the panic was too:

Quote:
No special measures for puma in weekend

17 June 2005

EDE - The municipality of Ede will not take special measures to keep people out of the Veluwe in connection with the puma that is on the loose. [..] The muncipality does however recommend that hikers and bicyclists stay on the paths and stay out of the forests and the heather fields between sunset and sunrise.

[..] In the weekend too, a serious sighting of the puma will be responded to by the respective authorities [it was confirmed]. Earlier there was talk of a suspension of the hunt for the animals on sunday for religious reasons. [The Veluwe borders the Netherlands' Bible Belt...]

The municipality does not expect crowds of people to come to the Veluwe especially to catch a glimpse of the puma. [..] "But warning signs have been hung up everywhere."

And this one:

Search for puma on the Veluwe

14 June 2005

EDE - The police will continue searching the Veluwe for a puma on Wednesday. The search action was suspended on Tuesday evening because of oncoming darkness. Around 22.00 the searchers saw the animal for a moment, but they lost it from sight quickly again. They did find a deer that was killed by the puma. [..] Experts of animal park Burger's Zoo recommend not to go into the forest area during dusk or in the dark.
