Hoping someone could help us with some info on inner Sydney Suburbs. My wife and I have successfully obtained our Australian residency and shall be moving in approximately 2months. We both have work in Sydney CBD and i want to find a SAFE suburb for my wife. My issue is that my wife will have irregular hours with her job and I would like to find an inner Sydney suburb that is safe for her to walk alone at night or early morning (within reason of course as I know that no suburb can be completely safe). We are 29 and 27, very much like to eat out and go for a drink or 2 so are looking for a lively area. We are looking to spend around 350pw on a flat and would like somewhere with good transport. We have been told by friends to try Surry Hills, Darlinghurst, Paddington and even Newtown. But what about the lower North Shore? Obviously as a visitor to somewhere you never really experience the true lifestyle of a place so hoping that there may be some Aussies with a lot more insight who may be able to help. We are so looking forward to coming and only need to finalise our living arrangements. Appreciate any help.

Fortunately, the Wabbit does not live in Sidney . . . you will be spared that, at least. It's evening in Oz right now, so you may get a response. They seem to lurk here at about this time of day, although often earlier. Miss Margo lives there, perhaps she'll show up.

..and if you click that link you will be waltzed off to well in excess of what you need to pay.
"' We have been told by friends to try Surry Hills, Darlinghurst, Paddington and even Newtown"" These are your friends? Where are they from, the Golden Triangle? Very Happy
Certainly the Lower North Shore. You may still be able to find something in Cremorne, or Cremorne Point for that sort of money, which means you look straight across to the bridge and the Opera House, and catch a ferry to Circular Quay in the morning to get to work. A magical start to the day.
Any suburb around that area I would suggest as a great area to live.
Almost as nice as the north coast, in fact....

I'd suggest Manly, Queenscliff, Harbord or Dee Why, and you could commute via the Manly Ferry or Jet Cat to the city each day (a 33 minute / 15 minute ride) across a magic harbour.

This is beach lifestyle living, where I grew up.

Move to Sydney
Hi there, if you are considering inner city, then I would strongly recommend looking at Balmain. Lots of pubs, great village atmosphere, and no less safe than anywhere else in Sydney.
I lived there for 8 years with two small children and it was fantastic. Regretably we made the big move to the 'burbs in January, but we still spend most of our weekend mornings in Balmain - lots of coffee shops with excellent coffee.
We are now in a quieter place - Lane Cove, which is still close to the city, but still not quite the same as good ol Balmain.

Safe suburb - sheeesh!
At night the isue is more transport - public or private, than a safe suburb. You need to lok at how your wife will be treavelling at her irregular hours. Does she need public transport? What's available? Trains at night do not feel particularly safe. ?Buses? Cabs?

Very difficult to answer these questions about Sydney.
