Mini meeting in Augsburg/Bavaria/Germany

Reply Sun 19 Jun, 2005 11:12 am
When CJ (Calamity Jane) announced that she would visit here native country, we arranged a meeting in Augsburg (where her parents live now).

We: that was only urs53 and myself.

I drove down to Augsburg (about 560 km/360 miles) on Friday (with an average speed of 128km/h = 80 miles per hour; it was some heavy traffic).

My hotel was in the old town center (and it was urs' as well, as we later found out).

On Saturday morning, I did what I usually do when being at an unknown place (and I'd never been to Augsburg before): I mad a non-planned walk around the town, however, with a (printed) town guide.

Shortly before 2 o'clock, urs and her friend Tanja arrived, seconds later CJ.

We had a nice lunch (actually only urs and Tanja  ), and talked about this and that.
It was rather warm, nut the sun came only out after we all had met!

After some time, we walked to the "Fuggerei", which are the oldest public welfare houses in Europe. It was built by the Fugger family [actually by Jacob Fugger the Rich], a very wealthy merchant family of Augsburg, between 1514 and 1523.

But you read more about it here on the BBC
.

After having visited this really very interesting place (and we got a good, short introduction of this "town in the town" by lady at the museum's cashier, who lives there with her husband), we walked through some different parts of the old town towards an ancient hospital, which now is partly a housing for elderly people and partly a museum (and theater) for ... marionettes.

Again, the BBC kindly has helped me and published this short article online.

Again, we passed parts of the old town and had then some cold drinks on the biggest open place in Augsburg, just meters away from our hotel.

We met met there by some of Tanja's friend (one couple being from Augsburg, the other from Munich. [Tanja's husband arrived later.]

We had reserved a table in a nearby restaurant for that night.
CJ.
While CJ went back home until then, some went shopping, others had rest or photographed (the photos will be shown later - on Thursday, I think - when the films are developed).

Shortly before we met in the restaurant, urs a got a call by CL that she unfortunately couldn't come because some relatives had arrived at her parents home, who wanted to meet her.
She wanted to try to leave in time to meet us, but ...

(And since she meets today, Sunday, more relatives in Munich, we didn't meet her in person anymore.)

So, the others had a nice meal (although in a bit loud place). Afterwards, we went around the town, so this and that .... it was the "night of culture", and a lot was going on, several cultural and not so cultural were opened during the night.

I left the hotel early this morning, the others ha breakfast (much later, I suppose  ) at Tanja's friend home.

My breaks on the way back where at some interesting (touristy ) places, where I didn't have just my coffee but also took some photos.

So, this really was a rather small and short meeting - but nevertheless a very pleasant one, in a nice place and with even nicer people.

Walter, thanks for the good report! :-)

Yes, it was a small 'gathering' but nice! I love Augsburg, the weather was great, I had the chance to give my friend Tanja a glimpse of A2K. It was a weekend very well spent!

I met Walter before so no surprise there ;-) CalamityJane is just like I expected her to be. Too bad we couldn't spend more time together. But I understand that family is important! So now we have a reason to visit California...

We had a nice breakfast this morning - we met just before ten and left for home at 12:30.

I got home at 2:30 which left just about three hours to spend with BigDice. Yeah!

Tanja, Gabriel and myself met for dinner at La Pergola, sat outside and enjoyed the Italian food and some wine. A perfect ending for this weekend!

As said, I will post my pics tomorrow.

But there are some online - published by the regional paper. (Okay, from the 'culture night')

We were really impressed by this action artist (saw even the "demasquerade")

That guy was cool. It took a while for him to get down to the ground and he did not look to happy for a bit there...

Yes Francis, where were you?

I just found out that the hamburgers are considering a trip to Germany next year. I'm trying to gently nudge them in the southern direction, toward Herr Hinteler and die kleine Urs. Very Happy

While urs really lives in the South, I'm living - according to my political ideas  - in the center of Germany.

Both of us would certainly be glad to arrange a meeting with the hamburger at any place (talked already with mr. hambuegr about that some time ago.)

Well, I arrived already on Friday, in the late afternoon in my hotel - and became later aware that urs was staying there (from Saturday until Sunday) with her friend as well.

The hotel is situated in one of the numerous patrican houses Augsburg:

There is not much of the old times left in the hotel - besides the ceiling in the entrance perhaps:

(but get a kind of 'romantic view' when photographed without flashlight  )

(Even Goethe noted that he loved the idea to paint houses like they did in Augsburg.)

On Saturday morning, I walked a bit around Augsburg on my own before meeting the three girls. (Had to steel my condition before meeting three girls, you know  )

[Those photos will be posted in the 'Travel' category together with some more pics I'd taken on my way back later.]

We had planned to meet in front of the McDonald's, but I thought, I might meet them before.

This was certainly someone else, listening here to some Bavarian folk music

Obviously a "mass meeting" of Bavarian men in traditional lederhosen costume wasn't a reason either for CJ, urs and/or Tanja to stand by and watch

We didn't only drink and eat, but talked of course a lot.

Finally, we really had to leave, if we wanted to see something more.

So we walked downhill

passed places and houses

By now, you surely have read all about this "town in a town", so I can post some more photos without poiting to the gardens, the church ....
