Ooh, this is good, an actual rain dance (just thought to plug that in):

These guys have pointy sticks, but look way too civilized:

I'll quit...

Cool picture in and of itself.

This is from sozobe's link: a painting by George Catlin, Mandan Rain Dance.

While visiting a pueblo we were told by the Indian tour guide that the ladders to the Kiva not only gave the direction ( north-south / east- west) by the uppermost step, but that the longer, pointed sides of the ladder are kind of a constant prayer for rain, the ends should catch the clouds.

There we saw a beautiful thunderstorm too. The sky was pitch-dark, black clouds seemed to reach the earth, thunder grumbled like freight trains or skittle alleys, and a horizon full of lightnings. No rain though.

Shocked

I awoke in the middle of the night, but went back to bed within an hour. I was actually disappointed in the degree of pyrotechnics, but then thought to myself that it must have been quite dramatic just prior to that, because i could not have otherwise explained what awoke me.

Sozlet came toddling in and woke me up at what I think was the very beginning of it -- MAJOR pyrotechnics for maybe half an hour, then tapering off.

Seems like i missed all of the fun. The announcer on WOSU just said that we'll be getting storms from the remnants of the hurricane over the next few days, so there might be other opportunities.

Batten down the hatches...

http://weather.yahoo.com/images/northeast_sat_440x297.jpg

Quote:
...NUMEROUS SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ARE POSSIBLE TONIGHT...

AS UNSEASONABLY WARM AND MOIST AIRMASS IS IN PLACE ACROSS THE
REGION TODAY. A STRONG COLD FRONT IS FORECAST TO MOVE INTO EASTERN
INDIANA THIS EVENING AND CONTINUE ACROSS THE AREA OVERNIGHT
TONIGHT. A LINE OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WILL DEVELOP LATER
THIS AFTERNOON ALONG THIS FRONT AND PUSH ACROSS THE AREA THIS
EVENING.

SINCE THESE STORMS WILL BE AFFECTING THE AREA AFTER DARK...THERE
IS SOME QUESTION ABOUT HOW MUCH INSTABILITY WILL BE AVAILABLE. BUT
IF THERE IS ENOUGH...THEN MANY OF THESE STORMS WILL BECOME
SEVERE...WITH DAMAGING STRAIGHT LINE WINDS BEING THE PRIMARY
THREAT. HOWEVER...THERE IS THE POTENTIAL FOR SOME TORNADOES AS
WELL...ESPECIALLY TO THE WEST OF INTERSTATE 75.

PEOPLE ACROSS SOUTHEAST INDIANA...NORTHERN KENTUCKY AND WESTERN
AND CENTRAL OHIO SHOULD MONITOR THE LATEST WEATHER FORECASTS
THROUGHOUT THIS AFTERNOON. REVIEW SAFETY RULES TO KNOW WHAT TO DO
IF SEVERE WEATHER OCCURS.

I love how that pic updates! When I posted it, it had a yellow and orange mass covering almost all of Indiana and headed our way. Now the mass looks a little less menacing and much more diffuse -- we'll see.

Snow, eh? Hope nothing too disruptive, ehBeth.

Oops, not so much on the "less menacing" -- now it's a tornado watch!

Oof.

In my area there is a slight drizzle which is causing me considerable consternation.

I worry so.
