@edgarblythe,
Did you try peanut butter? I thought my mom said that worked well for trapping mice.

Or just wait until the rat gets really old and then your dog will be able to catch it - like my mom's dog did.

@Linkat,
My dog has killed some rats, but this one never comes out long enough to be caught. I've tried peanut butter.

@edgarblythe,
I think the rat is too smart - he figured out it is a trap - you need a new trap

You need something like this

Or something like this:

@Linkat,
I killed one with the same kind of trap. Likely this one never will approach any trap. I may be able to borrow a have a heart trap from my old job. Last time I noticed they had a good one.

The rat took the peanut a foot away from the trap. The peanut three inches away has been there for two days.

Even Wile E Coyote couldn't catch that rat

All I can say is, it's not getting more free peanuts unless it takes the ones at the trap.

@edgarblythe,
Don't blame you. Ungrateful critters, anyhow!

I've thought about borrowing a have a heart trap from my old job, but it's a Home Depot purchase and I don't have faith in it. I caught a cat in one of those and it managed to find its way out.

@edgarblythe,
What you want to do is make sure the have a heart is comfortably furnished.

@edgarblythe,
I just had a genius idea!

If the rat is a male --- just bait the trap with a female rat that should attract him.

The one downside - if he is really that smart - he'd figure a way to help her escape and then you will really have a multiple rat problem.

It got closer to the trap last night. I am going to take a chance and bait the trap tonight.

The rat tripped the trap, grabbed the peanuts and made a clean getaway. I am doing in-depth research today. I obtained a copy of Mouse Hunt, to see how others dealt with the problem.

I've spent much of the day on rat Youtubes. Here is an example. I want to do this one, but not certain I can manage it because of limited space and a headstrong dog.
