@Region Philbis,
So should the government step in and stop these ignorant fools from hurting themselves?

@hightor,
I'm not going to educate you on what they are proposing. If you don't care to listen to them then you shouldn't be making sweeping claims about modern progressives (especially by citing Noam Chomsky)

You just can't admit that few if any Democrats have ever called for the banning of cigarettes because of the tax revenue they generate. They all are libertarians, right? Rolling Eyes

It's still very early in the campaign. I don't care to watch debates with 10 candidates on the stage as I don't think they're that informative. Now, I wasn't making "sweeping claims about modern progressives". I was just alerting you to the fact that there are elements of libertarian values which have been adopted by leftists in response to the excessive centralization seen in leftist revolutionary governments. If you're trying to sell socialism to USAmericans you want to have a better model than the USSR or China.

Why is everything broken down to D's vs R's? I don't think I've heard anyone proposing to ban cigarettes. Alcohol prohibition didn't work out that well so I think people are loathe to repeat the experiment.

If we replaced "sin taxes" with broad-based sources of revenue we wouldn't have the apparent conflict between the sale of an unhealthy product and the need for tax revenue. But would more people start smoking again if cigarettes were as cheap as they were in the '50s? Right now the high taxes are used as a disincentive as well as a way to raise revenue.

New York Set To Join Michigan In Banning Some E-Cigarettes
Quote:
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Sunday he will push for a ban on some e-cigarettes amid a health scare linked to vaping — a move that would follow a similar ban enacted by Michigan and a call from President Trump for a federal prohibition on certain vaping products.

I don't know, why do you do it?

As I pointed out, regardless of the merits, opposing (or failing to recommend) a ban of cigarettes can easily be explained by at least two significant segments of those who vote Republican. It doesn't fit in any of the those who vote Democrat. There is no meaningful Libertarian Democrat segment.

What continued sales of cigarettes do promote is vast amounts of tax dollars.

Now, both parties love to spend tax dollars but there is only one since the early '60s that wants to reduce them rather than increase them.

Well, today in my occasional visit to listening to the Rush Limbaugh program on the radio I was surprised, stunned, and ultimately entertained.

Missed his start, when I tuned in he was yammering about vaping. Turns out he got into it and had some health issues. His normally normal blood pressure had gone up. Way up. Way way way up.

At first it seemed a mystery, then he mentioned to the doctor that he had taken up vaping. A lot of vaping. The doctor explained that concentrated amount of nicotine found in the vape thingy would elevate the b.p. Mystery solved.

He had an 'unnamed millennial ' on digital recording telling her near death vaping experience. The person had never smoked cigarettes or marijuana, but decided to try vaping. (She's about 20 years old). She went with strawberry vape. She was falling asleep while vaping. One night she used a vape thingy from a friend and it was mainly nicotine. She became ill and had trouble going up stairs (she didn't indicate where the alleged stairs were or how many).

Rush Limbaugh solved it instantly. Telling listeners it was the same way kids get sick from their first cigarette or cigar. The deadly nicotine!

He went on to say nicotine is addicting and explained that it gets people in a subtle manner. Probably the only time I've heard him send out a warning of the medical sort.

Well, wouldn't you know, it wouldn't last? He then said that vaping would be safe if there was less nicotine, because (in his view) nicotine is not dangerous in and of itself. (he seemed to forget his b.p. scare).

He further indicated that cigarette smoking was not bad. Just the added carcinogens in the sticks. I guess lungs filling with smoke is healthy in his mind.

Anyway, I had things to do and shut down the radio.

Always interesting to find out what he has to say.

Oh, almost forgot... Rush also said it would take about 25 nicotine patches to equal the Vape. (did he try it himself, sticking patches all over his body?

@Sturgis,
Ahhhhhhh. Limbaugh, the calm voice of common sense

I’m beginning to remember why some of the members hate anything that even hints at progressive........

Such as “stupid air-headed nanny state” progressives think cigarettes must be banned because they think they are the only ones who know how life should be lived.....
BECAUSE
Wise, God loving, right thinking pillars of the community who worship Jesus so freaking much they are able to discern how foolish the people they suspect of progressive leanings are, must forbid and make illegal birth control, abortion and also transgender, homosexual, or anything that smacks of free will (I shudder to think of it) because They Are The Only Ones On God’s Green Earth
Who Know How Life Should Be Lived

And therefore dear hearts, that is why some people give themselves permission
to be so freaking snide.

Walmart to End Sales of E-Cigarettes

Vaping-related illnesses have been on the rise, and the authorities
have documented several deaths linked to the devices.

Walmart said on Friday that it would end sales of e-cigarettes at its
United States locations.

The decision comes amid growing medical concerns about the effects of
vaping. In recent months, mysterious vaping-related illnesses have been
on the rise. Medical authorities said on Thursday that the number of
vaping-related lung illnesses had risen to 530 probable cases, and a
Missouri man became the eighth to die from the mysterious ailments.

On Sunday, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo of New York announced emergency
regulations to quickly ban the sale of flavored e-cigarettes, and state
health officials approved the ban on Tuesday. Michigan announced this
month that it would also prohibit such products.

Last week, the Trump administration said it would move to ban the sale
of most flavored e-cigarettes.

Walmart had raised the minimum age for tobacco products to 21 earlier
this year, and said in May that it would also no longer sell “fruit- and
dessert-flavored electronic nicotine delivery systems.”

Do your lungs go kerplunk when you partake of a first cigar or cigarette? Don't know. Just asking. I think it's silly to ban all vaping. They only need to make it safer to do so.

No. That only happens when the guy doing your autopsy is drunk and drops them on the white marble floor.

@blatham,
I remember the first cigarette I ever smoked....one of my dads.

Got curious, snuck into his top dresser drawer where there was an open pack of Salems. Yeah, Salems. Hardcore.

Had a heck of a time figuring out how to light the thing, the hand mouth eye stuff not lining up. I was sitting at the foot of my parents bed, finally got it lit, and the next thing I knew I was lying on my back. Didn't know how I got there.

I think that was my brain going kerplunk.

@chai2,
Regaining consciousness lying on my back in a bedroom with no recollection of how I got there is something that has happened to me far less often than I would have preferred.

Yeah well....I was probably about 12 at the time so it wasn't something I cared to repeat right away. Laughing

I remember panicking hoping I didn't burn the bedspread.

I was a pretty small kid when I learned how to gather the cigarette buttes that were lying everywhere, it seemed. I would fashion a pipe from a corncob and a hollow weed stem and break the buttes into it. (I had a big brother who gave me ideas) The parents thought it was cute.

Yeah, there's a nightmare. I suppose a feature of accidental arson is that it's rather more upsetting than the purposeful variety.

@edgarblythe,
We began with autumn leaves rolled up in newspaper. It was very elemental. Nothing to do with smoke, really. Pretty much just straight flame.
