Help Understanding Problem Needed

Well the original problem was:
34-?
24-10
16-7
8-5
4-?

I thought the first was 14 and the second was 4, but then those two were wrong so I started guessing values for the first one, with the first pair I tried being 10 and 4, which turned out to be correct. So now I have:
34-10
24-10
16-7
8-5
4-4

What I don't understand is, how does that work? 4 fit the pattern I found, but 10 doesn't at all. Help understanding it would be appreciated.
