Do thread titles on web forums get italicized or go in quotes?

When referencing thread titles on web forums in sentences, do the titles get italicized or go in quotes? I want to make sure thread titles are being presented correctly when I do this.

Please help- thank you.

@JGoldman10,
I doubt that there are hard and fast rules for thread titles but this is what some manuals of style say:

Quote:
What Titles to Italicize…

Books
Magazines
CD albums
Movies
TV shows
Radio programs and radio series
Plays
Operas and long musical compositions
Paintings, drawings, photographs, and other works of art
Names of newspapers, both domestic and foreign
Long poems such as Dante’s Inferno
Cartoons and comic strips that occur regularly, such as Peanuts
Words you want to emphasize.
I told you to do it, not your brother.

What Gets “Quotation Marks” Besides Dialog?

Use quotes for a single song title and TV and radio episodes
Most poems (unless it falls into the above category of long)
Chapter titles
Article titles
Text directly quoted from other works (be sure to cite your source)

I think that thread titles are more like chapter and article titles so I would use quotation marks:

@hightor,
The general rule is, if it is large enough to stand on it's own it gets italicized, if not, it goes in quotes.

Threads are entries in web forums, so you probably could think of them as articles or like chapters in a book.

I think you are probably correct.

@JGoldman10,
You should post links if possible. Other wise there is no rule.

@Jewels Vern,
https://www.thoughtco.com/punctuating-titles-1857242 :

"Big things and things that can stand on their own, like books, are italicized. Little things that are dependent or that come as part of a group, like chapters, are put into quotation marks."

As I said, forums threads can be thought of like articles or chapters, because they are part of a group- web forums.

I think Hightor and I were on the right track about this.
