In sports such as tennis, does "to get past someone" mean "to defeat someone"?

It would usually refer to a particular play within the game (1) rather than ultimate victory or defeat but it could be applied in certain contexts (2):

(1) Jackson got past her opponent in the first set and was able to hold her lead.

(2) Jackson wasn't expected to prevail but she got past several strong opponents and won the tournament.
