I was listenning to a programme on organ donation yesterday...they were appealing for more Asian and Black donors, both for bone marrow and organ donation.
Is there anything in the Khoran that specifically forbids this?
Asian people (I would think Muslims are amongst) are one of the largest recipiants of organs, blood and marrow, yet are less than 3% of the register.
If there is something in the Khoran that forbids organ/blood/marrow donation, then why can Muslems receive organs/blood/marrow?
What if a Muslim were given a Christians heart? Given that the donor is highly likely to be non Muslim...would this provoke a religious dilema?
From the
BBC website:
Quote:All the major religions in the UK support both organ donation and transplantation.
There are three main exceptions to this: Christian Scientists, Jehovah's Witnesses and the Shinto faith
(The latter seems to be most Asian-related re your question  )
...but it obvously isn't a common a practice amongst ethnic groups as it is for others... hence the current drive to recruit more from under-represented groups, as there is a desperate need for doners. I thought it may have something to do with rules around buriel (timewise).
Believe it or not, I used to work in a cemetery (Southern) and I remember there being particular time restrictions on internment for Muslims and Jews.
Here is an important link on Islam and organ donation:
What does Islam say about organ donation?
Thank you so much for your replies...I feel better informed now.
