Piffka..
You say, "To me, an axiom is an established truth."

In modern math, the majority view about an axiom is that it is an arrangement to be true in the system in which the axiom is used. This is the view of Formalism, which is the main stream.

And you say, ".. do you think the coincidence of remarkable stories is a proof of anything?"

No. A few or several (possibly apparent) coincidences cannot prove anythihg. However personally meaningful "coincidence" can lead to a belief about something, and the mechanism of the "coincidence" is not explained in a fundamental sense. The concept of probability wraps the human ignorance about the process of occurence of seemingly random events.

Well, my definition of axiom comes from the Oxford pocket dictionary... not formal mathematics.

In astrology the mechanism of the "coincidence" is unknown, yet in the face of no other explanation, what have you got? The old traditions of studying the astrological movements seem to organize these extraordinary coincidences and give meaning to seemingly random events.

It really doesn't make too much sense.

The term "axiom" has a particular meaning in logic or math, and probability is a math concept in which context the "axiom" appeared here.

By the way, according to WordNet 1.7.1,

http://www.cogsci.princeton.edu/~wn/

the noun word "axiom" is defined as
"a proposition that is not susceptible of proof or disproof; its truth is assumed to be self-evident."

You say, "It really doesn't make too much sense."

I am not advocating astrology at all here. However I can say that if one believes in personal meanings in apparent coincidences of events in the vastly entangled systems of the universe, then the meaning found could be a form of realization of the person in the universe.

Oh. I thought you were and was hoping for some insight. I was looking at another topic and found this which you wrote last month. I'm very impressed. I have thought that waxing and waning periods should be separated -- this doesn't do precisely that, but it does have a similar rhythm.

It is a chinese solar calendar based simply on the solar (ecliptic) longitude. It is never used for fortune telling.
