Nominalism Question & Cult Question

Hi, I'm new here, and hope that somebody out there can help me untangle 2 vexing questions that I can't find the solution for Question :

(1) Does anyone know what religious group (possibly even a cult) in New Zealand used to have a name by the initials J.N.D. (which is no doubt John Nelson Darby), but now goes by a name the initials of which are B.D.H.?

(2) Can anybody help me understand why Roman Catholicism has a very prickly stance on Nominalism (not the mathematical kind, but the philosophical kind)?

I'm not looking for a debate here Very Happy , as you can tell from the nature of the questions; just some answers from someone who's more knowledgeable.

Many thanx in advance!

Nominalism Question & Cult
Anybody out there know ANYTHING about Catholicism & Nominalism? I just recently saw another reference to the issue in a book.

Thanks!

Nominalism is when you call yourself a Catholic...(or Baptist), but the only times you enter the church are likely for weddings, Easter, and funerals.

I guess this is why there are so many Catholics arguing so much with the extreme conservativeness of the church. Maybe they are nominal Catholics, who don't buy the whole deal anyway--but don't want to stop calling themselves Catholic...?

Formal Catholics go to church EVERY DAY, or at least several times a week.

Nominals -- only on special occasions.

Folk Catholicism involves voodoo, chickens, and freaky dancing. (Google Santeria.)

Nominalism & Catholicism
Hi, Lash!

Thanx for your post, but I was referring to Nominalism as in my previous post (the philosophical concept). Nominal Christianity (or Nominal Islam, for that matter) is a different issue.

Would you know anybody who'd be up on my question (2 posts above yours?)

I am thinking that the Church would have problems with the belief that there is, in essence, no reality behind the words and concepts that we use?

That this would be anathema to those who believe in a fixed, and divinely wrought, reality?

In fact, only, of the major religions, only Buddhism would be comfortable with it, no?

Nominalism Question & Cult
LOL! Yes, Lash, nominal religionists do indeed get into weird stuff like freaky dancing. (That makes up for the lack of substance in their souls/minds).

But see, the Nominalism I'm referring to stands in contrast to Universalism (which are concepts related to the whole realm of language/thought)------not religious Universalism, which teaches nobody'll end up in hell.

Ok - these may be way too simple for you - or not detailed enough - but here are a few urls:

Lash: Thanx heaps for that URL! I never thought of googling "critique of Nominalism" (only "nominalism" itself, which got me nowhere)! Sharp person, you! Smile

Now, if I could just untangle it all; it's so abstruse, and involves a whole bunch of concepts I'm not up on.

dlowan: Thanx also for your thoughts. That makes sense. Could you possibly extract from the URL Lash gave the essence of what they're saying there?

dlowan: YES! I think that 2nd URL you posted might help me out (the first one dealt with what Lash first thought I was talking about). They have something about the debate between Realists and Nominalists. Encouragingly enough, they also wrote, "As a movement "nominalism" is a difficult phenomenon to get one's mind around, because scholarly opinion on most things "nominalist" seems to be all over the map," which makes me feel a whole lot less imbecilic! Smile

Thanx! I will now return to that site to try to edjook8 myself!
