What is the name of the moon?

There are lots of moons in our solar system, and they all have names... except Earth's Moon, which is just called "The Moon".

Does the Moon have an english name which I've never heard before, or is it just called "The Moon".

Other planets have lots of moons, so they need names. Pluto only has one moon (as Earth does) but it's moon is called Charon.

The moon was called Luna by the Romans, Selene and Artemis by the Greeks, and many other names in other mythologies, but in english it just seems to be called, The Moon.

What are other names for The Moon in other languages? Should we choose a more poetic name for The Moon in English?

The name of the sole Terran satellite commonly is given as "Luna".

Not only the Romans call the Moon Luna. Luna is the official name. "Choosing" a more poetic name for the moon would be like choosing a more poetic name for the earth.

Luna is Luna in English, German, Greek etc.

Thanks, I wondered if Luna might be the English word as well as the others.

I don't usually hear people refer to the moon as Luna. "Is Luna full tonight?" "What time does Luna set tonight?" I'm gonna start calling it Luna and see how many people freak out Smile

Best Regards,

Since it is our only moon. People just call it the moon. Just as Earth is the name of our planet but people refer to it as the earth. Referring to the stars as just stars saves us from memorizing untold billions of star names that we probably couldn't pronounce anyhow. :-)

Something about the choice of words still seems inconsistant. For example, most people say, "The Moon". But they don't say "The Planet" when referring to the Earth. And they say "The Earth", but they don't say, "The Luna".

To be consistant, they should say, The Moon and The Planet, or The Luna and The Earth, or just Luna and Earth.

Actually, Terra is the common scientific/academic name of our planet. "Earth" or "The Earth" are essentially anglocentric conventions of common useage as opposed to any sort of "universal, cross-cultural name".

Sure they say "The Planet" ie "I have the greatest car on the planet"

Moon is a generic name while Luna is a proper name. We would refer to Bob as Bob...not The Bob

Also, Earth is the name of the planet. Earth is the name of the dirt on the planet. The oceans are not earth. Are we getting confused yet? Laughing

Oh! I thought we lived on the planet Dirt!

I've never heard anybody call our moon Luna, but we refer to Lunar phases or a Lunar eclipse. Similarly, we never call our sun Sol, except in poetry, but we call it the Solar system.

Coluber--

I'm a great reader of fantasy and science fiction. "Luna" and "Sol" and "Terra" are vacabulary staples in speculative fiction.

Yes, I agree, Noddy. Sol and Luna are used in science fiction, but the forms of the names solar and lunar are commonly used in everyday language, though "ole Sol" is also quite common.
