A man's legs and hands were amputated and more than a month later, he's still hospitalized awaiting more surgeries.

The cause of all of this: Bacteria from dog saliva that caused a rare blood infection, doctors told them.

Capnocytophaga canimorsus is a bacterial pathogen found in healthy dogs and cats. There are more than 700 different types of bacteria in a dog's mouth. While rare, people have contracted this bacteria, usually through dog bites, and died.

Licking can also prompt infection.

@Linkat,
I wonder whatever became of the dog... Also, can't they get some sort of nasty diseases from all that licking those humans do to them?

@najmelliw,
Just for clarity, I have never licked a dog. Ever!

Ok, so we have established you have never, ever licked your dog just for clarity. Sound reasoning, I suppose. I don't think I would ever be able to gain clarity from licking a dog.

So,what do you lick dogs for then, roger? :-P

@najmelliw,
You're Dutch and have a sense of humor? Well, fan me with a blowtorch.

@Linkat,
One thing he won't be doing is petting it.

@roger,
A shocker, isn't it? It's completely wasted on me too. Funny people can make a nice career out of it, but since Dutch people are quite humorless, they wouldn't be able to recognize a joke if it bit them in the ass(dog pun intended).

Sigh.

@Linkat,
This is another ridiculous overreaction. From what I see, 56 humans in the US have been diagnosed with this disease over a period of 32 years. I think you are more likely to get a deadly disease from kissing humans.

I think it is funny that people who drive an automobile every day freak out over some exotic disease they read about on the internet.

This is goofy . . . I don't even know what your dog looks like. I would certainly never kiss your dog.

A while ago, I was leaving a public restroom after using the urinal. A random guy stopped me and said "excuse me sir... where I am from we always wash our hands after using the bathroom".

I replied... "where I am from we don't pee on our hands".

Funny. Neither Set nor I like dogs to lick/kiss us, but we happily share cutlery with Bella. We had a small ice cream last night while we were out for a walk. I knew the plan so had plastic spoons in my back pocket. We were both doing spoon for me/spoon for Bella. Her spoon got about as much ice cream as fits on my baby fingernail but, still, full sharesies.
