Oh us pitiful Democrats. Denigrating Bush through hatred and low morals. Clinton and Kerry suck.
OK, perhaps I'm way out of the box here - but if those pilots were tortured by Iraqi torturers the one and only right thing to do is to haul those torturers to court and sentence them - and those they received their orders from too. For crimes against humanity or what not. If the Iraqi justice system wont do it, the international court should. Is what its there for.
And that is all there is to it, imho. I dont think the new Iraqi government, people who themselves suffered at the hands of those same torturers, should now pay out millions of dollars to a dozen and a half of Americans when in its own country there must be tens of thousands of people who suffered through much worse still.
In short, I agree with the US government that asking the current Iraqi government for a massive financial compensation in this case is wrong; but I do think that instead, they should throw all their weight behind a case the POWs could make in trying to get their tormentors and their superiors in front of a court and have them be sentenced for what they did. No idea how that would work in terms of legal frameworks etc, but that seems the right thing to me. Get the guilty convicted and the innocent set free, thats what justice is about, isnt it? I mean, its about justice isnt it, not about money? Then I dont see how letting the guilty people walk free, but force unrelated people to pay up in their place, would help, sorry.
C'mon, nimh. Don't you think they could at least throw them a bone?
If the men suffered lasting disabilities from the torture they suffered while doing combat duty for their country, I think their country - the US government, thus - should ensure a generous arrangement of disabilities benefits, yes. Dont know if thats what you mean.
Congrats on your 6,000th post there, btw
