Hi, we'll be moving to Surry Hills this year but are a bit worried about safety given its proximity to Redfern, etc. Does anyone know what the crime situation is like there?
Also, if anyone can recommend places/shopping strips where we can get cheap/secondhand furniture and appliances that would be great! Thanks!
Redfern has a unenviable reputation, but it's not as dreadful as painted. I have worked in the Redfern/Waterloo district for years and seen some stuff, but never ended up on the wrong side of it.
There's any number of second-hand/pawn shops in the area (wonder where all the stuff came from?), at Redfern proper there is (hopefully) an discout outlet for white goods on Redfern St near the station. Further down Sth Dowling St (Mascot end) is a huge outlet centre for home/housing.
You can also range down King St and Parramatta Rd for bargains. Good luck!
That's pretty reassuring. I'll try the places you mentioned, thanks!
I have many friend who live in Surry Hills area. It is quite lovely.
You'll note the Redfern / Surry Hills scene has improved considerably, now that Mr Stillwater no longer works there! Wonder why that is!

I spent a lovely time at the Macquarie Estates recently, I think that all this talk of rioting is overdone!
Dapto. There's somewhere that needs the 'Stillwater Touch' - nearby it is margo?
Going to the dogs - go to Dapto!
I have (or had - dunno) and aunt and uncle and their 12 kids living there at one time - that's an awful lot of wild Irish!
