Headin 2 Oz in May - Dec!! Need Advice!!

Hi,
My boyfriend Cool,27 and I ,25 are heading to Australia in May and my initial plan is to head to Perth first and possibly work for 2-3 months. Then to venture over to Sydney and possibly work for another 2-3 months, but I want to see as much of Australia as I can while I'm there. Do you think it would be better to just work in one place, say Sydney and then do the traveling or vice versa?

Where would be the best place to stay in both Perth and Sydney?

I have an Engineering degree but I don't know if I should go for Engineering jobs as I have a stressful job here and I think it would be good to break away from it for the time there. If so, what sort of jobs would fairly easy to find with immediate starts? Even if I did go for an Engineering position, what would be my chances securing one for 3 months (work visa permission)?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Lol - bumping is a way of getting your question to appear again when people log in.

I am not from Sydney or Perth, so I have not felt able to help you especially. Nor am I an engineer! So I am just trying to get your question more chance of being seen.

I would perhaps, though, think of working in Perth first - then travelling as the whim takes you.

There is plenty to be seen outside of Perth and Sydney!!!

WA alone is huge - has fantastic places -like The Kimberleys. If you then drive to Adelaide, over the Nullarbor - well, the coast is lovely - it is the flattest place on earth - there are fantastic caves, including one with a huge lake inside it.

From Adelaide you can travel north - through the Centre - then mebbe head to the east coast.

Thanks 4 that, much appreciated. Very Happy

Well my plan is a RTW trip starting from Ireland - Thailand (1-2 wks)- Perth (work 3 months) - Alice Springs - Cairns (backpack / travel down the east coast to Sydney) - Sydney (work 3 months) - New Zealand (1-2 ks) - Fiji (1 ca) - LA (1wk) - New York (1 wk) - back to Ireland.

I plan to settle in Perth first, get a job and on days off travel around Perth. I'm not sure yet whether to get an internal flight to Alice Springs and then up to Cairns or bus it up? Which way would you recommend?

But when we do get to Cairns we're travelling down the east coast with one of those discovery packages to Sydney. When we get to Sydney try 'n find another job there and do the odd touristy things round there on days off.

In both Perth and Sydney we're goin to try n rent a place while we're there. Do you know any good websites for recruitment agencies, places to rent, or any other useful websites?

Also, how does the tax system work there? What rate of tax is charged? Ours here is currently 20% but we get a tax credit too. Is there a minimum wage there, so I'd know roughly how much we could afford on rent etc.?

C.

So many questions; so little time!

It sounds like a plan to travel to Perth first, and look for work there for a while. I have no idea what the work situation is - I live on the other side.

Thinking about it - I have no idea what the work situation is like in Sydney for your sort of qualifications and experience.

Accommodation - have a look at domain.com.au -
it's one of the best rental sites for Sydney. Consider share accommodation - as most rentals are for 6 months minimum.

This question can probably much better be answered on the Lonely planet site, the Thorn Tree.

Don't forget the size of Australia. This is not a cute little country. The distances are enormous, and the population of the interior is about zero, except for Alice and a cuppla others. Unless you're especially interested in getting a close look at a lot of desert, you should fly to Alice Springs or wherever, and then on to Cairns.

I Live in sydney, and its a wonderful city on its own but don't neglect the non-city rural areas too. As far as i know we have two tax systems that work together we have an income tax system where part of your pay goes to tax depending on how much you earn and the rate is usually alot highre for non residents working in Austrlia than for residents and we have GST(goods and services tax) where 10% of the price of things is added to the cost and that goes to tax aswell. As for the best place to work I would say despite my inexperience a city centre with lots of oppertunities and population whether it be Perth, Sydney or Brisbane etc... hope this helps

I can only point out that 'driving' in Australia is NOTHING like driving in other places. There may be very long stretches without things like petrol or people or food or water.

Make VERY firm plans to travel and take double everything you think you will need and let some-one know what and why and where you are doing it. Last year an English gent thought he could easily drive from the West Australian coast to NSW. He didn't. He's like..... dead.

Also make sure you carry a mobile telecommunications device a mobile phone may not be the best device to carry as mobile service/reception is very poor if not non-existent in the middle of australia maybe a satellite phone might be better despite the extra cost it might just save your life, many people have been stranded in the rural centre of the country and unable to get help because of no reception on there cell phone.
