Your missus might be right, the camera was pointing in a northerly -ish direction. The illumination was from an afternoon (setting) sun.
To answer other queries, the Iron Men statues are quite recent, by the sculptor Anthony Gormley.
People seem to like them. In fact my barnacled friend has no barnacles on the end of his John Thomas. What is one to take from that?
