This could have something to do with diversions, any diversions, involving just about anything at all, looking very attractive when I'm supposed to be cleaning my house up for a possible sale!

Yep, Deb .... sale

but note: I said "possible sale". I will be selling only if offered a suitable amount for my house. If not, I will happily stay on here for god knows how long.

In the meantime I'm clearing & cleaning the place like woman possessed.
So if I don't sell, at least I'll have a much tidier, less cluttered place! Very Happy

This has been one of many things that have kept me super-busy over the past few weeks. What a tiring business it is -doing all the necessary stuff, on one's own, between work, sleep & life!

Question: Do all, or a number of, QANTAS planes carry the word 'Longreach' on the fuselage? (ie, part of the registration, or indicative of a class of plane, etc) Or are individual planes called after towns in Oz?

Just curious, as the plane that had the problems the other day was 'Longreach' as was the plane that flew the Pope home earlier in the week. Really turned out to be 'holy', didn't it?

I'm under the impression that all qantas planes have Longreach on them. A reference to where quantas started I believe. an acronym for Queensland And Northern Territory Air Services Longreach. Its possibly part of their registered business name.

Later news reports said it was soft hail, rather than snow. Wasn't in my area, though.

I've never seen snow here - and I've lived here all my life (so far!) We had some pretty fierce hail a couple of years back that banked up like snow drifts.

Was a pretty crook day here yesterday, though!

Good to see you MsOlga! Interesting that you are up for a sale if it comes your way. Usually, it seems, people are more enthusiastic (driven? single-minded?) when they come to selling their homes.

Thanks, k. Good to see you, too! I do hope life is treating you well.

The reason I sound less than "enthusiastic", k, is because I would dearly love not to be worrying about selling & buying a home (again) at all! My little cottage is very dear to my heart, but some pretty worrying cracking has occurred in the walls as a result of years of drought. When I'm feeling calm about things, I tell myself that this has happened to old houses all over the place, as a result of the drought .... BUT then, when not so calm & philosophical(aghhhh! Shocked ), I see that if this sort of damage continues I won't that the $$$$ to do the necessary repairs.

I have been looking "further afield" (sigh) & have found nothing so far(which I could actually afford) that I would be exactly thrilled to live in. Nor at a location that appeals. I confess I've had a few rather depressing moments, contemplating the possibilities ....

Then I come back here & see all the things I love about living here: a little slice of local history (one of the original buildings in the area), a yard which I love working in & have put a lot of time & energy into (& is great for cats, too! ), a five minute walk to train, tram, local market, my bank, Medicare office, council offices, just about everything you could think of .... apart from that, I've put down roots here. I like it here! I know all the local traders, like my street & most of the people I know in it & it feels like home.

You get the dilemma.

So now I'm in the process of cleaning my place up for possible sale, while looking at other properties I might buy at the same time. If I can't get enough to buy something I'm happy with, further afield, I've decided that I'll stay on here & just keep patching the cracks up! Lots of other folks are doing this very thing. In terms of buying another place: it doesn't help that I'll be slugged something like $20 th in government tax when/if I buy again. (Yes, outrageous, I know! Evil or Very Mad )

In the meantime, all this clearing & cleaning is very good for the soul, I've discovered. But I'm really, really seriously tired!

I getcha.

I HATE cracks.

Would paving around the place help lessen the impact of the dry/wet cycle?

I used to water around my foundations in summer....when we still had water....(and I had plants there)...to lessen the problem, but an architect friend said paving would help. It just makes the differences not so pronounced. Not that my place had any bad cracks, thank heaven.

But I really do get you.

Have you had any advice re ameliorating the problem from a structural engineer? It costs a bit, but I had a place I was thinking of buying checked by one...and he said the paving on that place was a good thing. And, as you say, you'll be slugged a small fortune if you move.

I know just why you don't want to move....and also why the purging and cleansing feels so good.

Ah thank you, Deb! Very Happy

Most people I talk to about this (especially at work) wouldn't let mere sentimental considerations get in the way of (what should be) a straight-forward, sensible decision! ("Ya got cracks, ya get out!")

And it rather gets up my nose ( Evil or Very Mad ) that inevitably, no matter how hard I try not to, I will end up with extra costs for a new house & a location I might not like half as much. (Say nothing of the $20 k gift to the state government for doing absolutely nix! An amount that would make a huge difference to what I might be able to buy. What a noive!)

So .... right now I'm cleaning & clearing out stuff... cleaning & clearing, relentlessly. (Noddy would be proud of me!) And keeping my options open.

Paving might help - I dunno, Deb. But I have a considerable amount of (fairly newish) decking down the side & back of the house that would have to be removed to put the paving in. Hmmm.

But at least now (compared to about a week ago) I feel more relaxed & less driven about having to find something new - & fast! Lucky my real estate agent is such an obliging & understanding chap, hey?

I can understand that dilemma.

I sold my last house because the cracking was getting worse - and I couldn't even consider underpinning - which was what was needed.

Compromise, compromise Crying or Very sad

I moved into a villa complex, bigger mortgage, new house, but no appreciable garden - and I miss that garden, that space around me.

And there's no trees. Bloody Italians. What do they have against trees?

Yes, I remember you talking about that when you & L were visiting here a while ago, margo. So you lived in inner-city Sydney before the move?

Possibly I should be considering under-pinning, but like you, then, it's a daunting prospect.

And yes, it is going to boil down to a compromise, either way. Right now the house is getting a most amazing clean & clear-out of unnecessary "stuff" .... then I'll see.

I'm quite happy for my agent (whose become something of a friend, really, since the sale of my/our previous house) to advertise it on one of those internet real estate sites. When I'm ready. Then we'll see what potential buyers are willing to pay. He (my agent) will be quite OK about it if I decide not to sell & won't charge me anything for any work done if this is what I decide. If I'm seriously considering buying another property he'll check it out for me. He's a good bloke.

One thing I know for certain is that I need some land/garden. Not necessarily as much as I have now, but some! Essential, or I'd go nuts!
And I'm not in a (financial) position to take on extra, new debt (as you did) with a new home. I don't want to either. Hey, I just paid this one off a few months ago! It feels fabulous not to owe the bank anything! Very Happy

Anyways ... quite a bit of this saga to go yet!

ps .. I don't think it's just Italians who have something against trees. It's bloody developers that do! Evil or Very Mad

Look, I know it's (AFL) grand final week & I know this is Melbourne ...... but this (possible return of James Hird to Essendon football club after a year of "retirement") was the lead story on page 1 of my newspaper this morning. Seriously! [/i] Confused Neutral

Incidentally, the AFL grand final being on Saturday & all .... what do you predict?: the cats or the hawks? Do you care really, really deeply about which side wins? Wink
On Saturday afternoon my city, Melbourne, will become a ghost town, as loads of people stay home & watch the grand final on television. (Impossible to buy tickets for love or money (unless you want to pay heaps of $$$ to the scalpers!) at this stage. It's a great time to travel across the (sprawling) city. The roads & freeways are usually deserted, a breeze on grand final day. I think I'll take that trip (eastwards) I've been putting off. Very Happy

@msolga,
Well James is a Canberra boy....

I've heard that the audience across the nation has crashed because it's two Victorian teams. How odd.

@hingehead,
He is? By golly, you learn something new every day ....

Hell what do we Victorians care about the rest of the nation? Those inter-state teams are just a bloody nuisance, anyway. The AFL is all about US. Always was, always will be .... Razz
