<sniff> Bye bye Qantas!

& while I'm at it ...

bye bye Vegemite

... & Myer stores

... Sao biscuits

... Bata shoes ....

& What else?

Perhaps it's more of a question of what we still haven't sold off?

The Oz media is quite ga-ga at this event, but the Oz public appear somewhat underwhelmed. Still, with that nasty Tom person already remarried & all ... :

Nope, just about every Australian appears to be engrossed in a very different form of mass hysteria. Involving folk called Harry Cool & Guuuss someone. It's utter madness, I tell you! (the AFL is the Australian Football League, which is becoming quite threatened by all this hysteria about soccer!)

How to make Italians laugh
Peter Munro in Perugia, Italy
June 26, 2006/SMH

THE greatest joke in Italy today is that Australia will beat them in the World Cup. The very suggestion elicits howls of laughter and shaking heads. ......

Hi Ms Olga,

Australia has always fascinated me. (I wish to go into the details but can't because its time I retire to bed. I have been surfing all day today.)
I pose my question directly:

How safe is Australia for women?

And hope to listen to you in detail.... Smile

Hi spider!

"How safe is Oz for women?"

That's a question with many possible answers!

Personally, I feel very safe. (As a woman living on her own in the second largest city in the country.) But possibly other places in the country might feel less safe?

Perhaps others can add their bit, spider.

I'd be interested about the context of "safe" you're interested in. It's a BIG concept! Smile

Safe? Hah, I mean, can I go around hanging with my gal friends at midnight at the Squares and the malls without worrying about its-late-i-must-go-home thing.

Safety in terms of rape, sexual harrasment, you get the idea, dear Olga?

I've never felt safer. I have an eighteen year old daughter I dont worry about here at all.

Normal sensible precautions apply.

I think I'm getting the idea, spider.

I think it's rather like dadpad said. You probably would be safe if you applied sensible precautions. For example, I don't think it would be sensible to hang around a place known for trouble, while alone & drunk at midnight! I often walk down a narrow, rather isolated little street to the shopping centre (very near to where I live) but wouldn't dream of doing that alone after dark. To the best of my knowledge no one has ever been assaulted, robbed or raped there ... but I'd still prefer to avoid that area after dark.

But you know, I think their are bullies in any place on earth, who would take advantage of a person they perceived to be weaker if the opportunity arose. Any answer I can give you can only be a subjective one. Most of the time I do feel safe. I'm sure sexual harassment does still occur in some work places, but it's something that's generally frowned upon ... besides, you could take the offender to court if you chose to! As for rape, of course it happens. Probably considerably more than we get to hear about. From time to time there are stories in the newspapers about "date rapes", young women being sexually assaulted having drinks "spiked" in night clubs, appalling sexual behavior by sports teams, etc, etc .... But once again, these practices are widely frowned upon & can lead to very damaging publicity, court cases & charges for the offenders. I don't have the facts & figures & statistics to compare these sorts of offences in Australia with other countries, but I'd guess ours would be much the same as those of countries with similar cultures. That doesn't really answer your question, I guess ....

Olga,
I do get the idea. Thanks for sharing your experience. Recently, I decided to compare safety of women in India to other countries and Australia, a developed country with a good rapport for law and order, was my first target. Also because, Australia is one of the target countries for my post-graduate education. It doesn't matter if you don't have the statistics. I needed a general idea.

How far down the track are you with your research, spider?
And do let me know if I can assist in any way, OK?
