As those who benefitted from this administration, and those who expect to benefit are spending over forty million dollars on the coronation of King George, the rest of us should remember several things:
Bush said that he could not remember any mistakes his administration made
Gibbon said that the decline and fall of the Roman empire was due to the triumph of barbarism and religion,
Santayana said that those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.
I hope that the United States can recover from the damage already done by this administration and from that yet to come

Apparently you didn't read Gibbon. He actually said the fall of the Roman empire was due to the triumph of barbarism and the persecution of religion.

The fall of the roman empire was decadence.

The roman empire had withstood strong attacks from both in adn out before without breaking. Decadence and dishonest leaders were it's fall, as is the fall of every great empire

Idaho:

You may wish he said "the persecution of", but your quotation is at variance with his words.

True that TTF. Every Ceasar wanted to better the one before him. They all wanted to be remembered for expanding the realm. Holding on to it was always the next ceasars concern.

A politic that did not extend further than one generation may have had something to do with it?

Bush is not a bad man. You americans have your own system of choosing presidents. So, why to regret Bush's election? Is he worse than Clinton, or Ford, or Reagan, or ... I see him as a simple man, perhaps not very bright, but sincere. His staff is another thing.
Of course, american soldiers will die in absurd wars. But that is your history.

Of course I said all this because I am european, and I don't care very much about Bush's little wars. Smile

I'm european too val. I live on the south-west coast of norway. We have oil, so maybe Bush will come visit one day? Smile

I don't know what Bush is. He's not a saint, that's for sure. Maybe he is the right man to lead USA in these times. Maybe he is disaster fo his country.

This still remains to be seen. I refuse to believe that the american people are so dimwitted that they will allow one man to screw up everything. If he gets out of hand he will be dealt with by his own.
