You should have been in my neighborhood last winter. We had a group of deer, affectionately called 'our gang' that roamed the streets. I'd come home at night and find three of them hanging out under a lamp post. One would hide under my front porch.
Actually, I think their estimate is kind of low. The stats I have from the National Shooting Sports Federation (NSSF) claim whitetails numbered some 36,000,000 in 2001.
And it should be pointed out west (CA, AZ, and NV), black tail and mule deer are the dominant species. These aren't included in the count.
