Just looked it up, I'll amend it a bit -- it was white starting in about 1800 some places, then stopped during WWII here, and came back after the war, which is what I was thinking of.

Good Queen Victoria was married in white.
Before her time the wedding dress was usually something that could be worn on other occasions. A Dress for One Wearing would have been wickedly extravagant for most brides.

As an uppity honorary third cousin thrice removed of the bride I am insisting that all thoughts about symbolism, commericalism and general hoopla in weddings be posted here:

I think Panzade did mean we shouldn't lock Magus out of the discussion, I could be wrong. In any case, the merits of money on weddings has been moved to another channel.
