I have solved it
This is a great problem. I was totally excited when I found the answer. Of course, the excitement starts immediately when you figure out how can you ever get as huge numbers as 10850 or 2616 in the sequence. ;-)

You will need more then ten keystrokes to write down the correct answer, and once you know the explanation, you will be absolutely sure that it is the correct answer.

You also need to know how to use the internet and how to calculate x^2 for x integers smaller than 10. No more hints. If someone can't live without an answer, he can try to ask me at [email protected]

One answer that works is to spell out the numbers into letters, and count the letters:

E.g.
two=3/ six=3/ one=3/ six=3/ (3),

eleven=6

one=3/ zero=4/ eight=5/ five=4/ zero=4 Total 20 divided by 6 =3.3
(11 could also be one=3/ 0ne=3/ = 3.3)

two=3/ five=4/ two=3/ zero=4/ three=5/ eight=5/ Total 24

divide 24 by missing number (8) = 3

How certain are you of the answer? Other websites have suggested the answer as 12, 14, and 42.
