How to proofread my writing?

Hi,

I want to write excelent in terms of grammar and punctuation. To achieve that, I know I have to write a lot, but I don't know anyone who can check and proofread what I write.
How do I proofread my writing? How to detect any errors and mistakes by myself?

Even great writers who have professional skills with the language they are writing in, use outside eyes to proofread. Sometimes when you are close to the material or see it so often, you'll overlook simple mistakes. It's just part of our behavior. So even good writers use multiple proofreaders to look over their work.

However; there is some software you can get that checks grammar, like grammarly. I don't know how effective it is though. I have never used anything like that.

@Krumple,
Thanks,

Can you suggest anything that helps spot any mistakes?

For example: after I finish a pharagraph, what should I look for to find anything wrong?

@Filmmaker,
What about spellcheck? If you'd used that you'd see that excellent is spelled with two ls not one. Not only that excellent is an adjective, adjectives describe nouns, write is a verb, you need an adverb to describe it.

How do I write excellently? would be the correct form, but I don't like the word much. You'd be better off writing How do I write well?

So use spell check, and adverbs/adjectives correctly.

Most importantly read good writers, see how they do it, and some of their skill should rub off.

@Filmmaker,
Although it's a great challenge to proofread your own writing, you might find it effective to proofread after some time has passed. It's far more difficult to find your mistakes if you proofread immediately after you've written the material. Give yourself some time and come to it with a fresh eye.

Beware of spell check!! It can't tell you whether their or there is right. Is it supposed to be its or it's?
