Which of the following sentences is correct?

1) In the recent past, some Arab states wanted to wipe Israel out of the Middle East map.

2) In the recent past, some Arab states wanted to wipe Israel off the Middle East map.

By the way, with the expression "in the recent past", is it correct to use the simple past above or should I have used the present perfect?

Thank you.

Something gets "wiped off the map"

You could just say, "Recently " because "recent past" is confusing.

This is an adjective phrase, not a verb, so there is no tense.
