Without life, there is no meaning. The universe is mere being without the existence of sentience. What do you mean by meaning? Purpose? I don't believe it has any intended purpose.

@emptymind,
Alan Watts!
You've just jolted my memory, emptymind ...
I read some of his book years & years ago. Smile
I'll return in a wee bit to properly check out the videos.
Thank you for posting & welcome to the MOL thread. Smile

edit: ... & a warm welcome to A2K, too! I just checked & I see this is your second post to the forum. A pleasure to meet you, emptymind.

@Sentience,
Hello, Sentience.
I'm sorry, but I didn't see your post till now.
Welcome! A pleasure to meet you, too! Smile

I feel I should try to explain a little about this thread to you & to other new A2Kers, especially the title.

Way back on the 2nd of January, 2005, I posted this cartoon, which I thought was a bizarre but apt comment about humans & war. I named the thread after the title of the cartoon: "the meaning of life", thinking that it would be a one-off thread & not really knowing what I expected to happen with the thread. I think I just wanted to share the cartoon with others here.

Well, one thing led to another & the thread sort of developed a life of it's own .. a place for people to send any visual commentary on the human condition (etc, etc!), if you like ... : political cartoons, philosophical cartoons, photographs, etc, ... it happened rather spontaneously & here we are 5+ years later. Sometimes the thread is dormant for a time & at other times (like now) it springs back to life with fresh posts.

Originally I posted this thread in the "general" category, but it somehow found its way into the philosophy forum.
I don't know that any answers to philosophical questions are to be found here ( Smile ), but there are certainly many observations about the weird, sad, funny, tragic, mysterious, cruel, magical & mad things that human beings get up to.

So may I extend an invitation to any of you with an interest in visual commentary to feel free to post your contributions, too. (And I hope the thread title has not caused too much confusion! Wink )
