Going down together
April 30 2007: John Reid has called for party unity and thrown his weight behind Gordon Brown as the party braces for a meltdown in Thursday's elections.

...... The puckish 22-year-old second lieutenant confesses that he loves "running down a ditch full of mud, firing bullets".

Much public angst ensues. Everybody loves Harry, the rosy-cheeked younger son of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. Nobody wants him harmed, and nobody wants him to be a royal target and put his mates at unnecessary risk from insurgents enthusiastic to stick a dagger in Britain's collective heart.

In February, Defence Secretary Des Browne announces that Harry is going to war. It's official: his unit ships out later this year. ... <cont>

I don't see why Royals should be exempted from military duty, if that is the career they're in. Of old, royalty has always been closely tied to the military and in the heroic past kingdoms were won and lost in war. And if some prince gets killed, so what? No worse than when John Doe kicks the bucket. It might be a nice propaganda opportunity for the House of Windsor (that they lead from the front, etc.). When was the last time a prince got killed for good old England? (1879, when the prince imperial Napoléon Eugène (Bonaparte) got on the wrong side of an assegai in the war between the bloodthirsty Zulus and the equally bloodthirsty British invaders?)

Hi Paaskynen!

Actually I'm neither here nor there about whether Harry goes to Iraq or not. I just loved the cartoon!

But, I think I might feel a bit worried if I was part of his squad there, if in fact the insurgents do decide they want to target him!

So Harry is NOT going now - lucky ol' Harry

Maybe the simple answer is to stop putting 'royals' into the forces - I mean, what's the point, if it's too risky?

Don't worry, the press will think of something!

Maybe he could become a Greenpeace activist - turn his swastika around, so to speak.

Have you seen Steve Bell's latest? It's a really good one (for Blair to go out on). I nabbed it for myself - sorry Very Happy

I think Bell has been an outstanding cartioonist for me, throughout this war - and it's not over yet.

Nice talking to you Olga - I think what you have collected here could one day be of great importance.

Peace,
Endy
