I do enjoy Gummbah! Can you tell us a bit about him/her? I've never seen his/her work before before. Love it!
I have the feeling that Gummbah & Leunig are kindred spirits, of sorts. What do you think? Though Leunig has more bitter & twisted moments these days ..... With good reason, mind!
He used to be more whimsical & cheeky earlier on in his career. I think life & politics have taken their toll on him, poor thing.
I don't know much about Leunig, so I can't really say how much he has in common with Gummbah. Although Leunig seems to be more into politics, while Gummbah hardly ever makes a cartoon related to politics. Gummbah is more into absurdism and his main themes seem to be (sexual) perversion, religion, illness and death.
What I know about Gummbah is that he is raised in a very religious family and that he's kinda shy. I've seen only one televised interview with him, and I guess it's the only one he's done. In that interview he was really shy, but funny. Somewhat weird, but funny. He said he drank
at least one bottle of wine every day, claiming wine is healthy to drink. When the interviewer pointed to him that wine is only healthy in small amounts, such as one glass every two days, he claimed he 'did not know that,' laughing timidly. He said he works 5 minutes a week, which is enough.
He also made a theatre show, based on his absurd cartoons, with one of the Netherland's most populair cabaret artists/comedians and his director; which was very funny. That's pretty much all I know about Gummbah.
Here's some more cartoons, which will give you a pretty good idea about which issues he deals with in his art.
