It's changed a lot but there is definitely an element that is xenophobic, which is pretty funny considering what a bunch of ethnic mongrels we are. I would say our ethnic mix is as varied as the US but generationally younger. Your major period of immigration is the Ellis island era, prior to World War One , not that it's really stopped, ours is post ww2.
What we don't have is significant demographic 'blocs' like 'black' and 'Latino'.
