@koalabears23,
Congrats!

I got gold as well. I answered something like 2 - 4 minutes after it came out.

Blah, I'm bored waiting for the new one. The news has been coming out somewhat late recently.

@koalabears23,
Hey, congratulations. Another thank you due to Cathy888, I imagine, or did you figure it out yourself at about the same time?

A Kookith was inexplicibly propelled out of a window in one of Brightvale Castle's towers.

The Kookith left the window at a horizontal speed of 20 metres per second, and the window was at a height of 45 metres, and the ground outside of the tower was perfectly horizontal, and the Kookith's mass was 6.2 kg. Assume gravitational acceleration of 9.8 metres per second squared.

How much horizontal distance, in centimetres, will the Kookith travel from the tower before hitting the ground? Assume no additional forces (such as air resistance, insect collisions, magical Kookith propulsion, etc) are acting on the Kookith and round to the nearest centimetre. For example, if the Kookith lands 283.8 metres away, you'd submit the answer "28380"

@koalabears23,
There's no way I'm going to get this one. Good luck to everyone else!

@koalabears23,
Agreed. I never learned this sort of thing in school, and I have no desire to try to figure it out now when I'm half asleep. Razz

@skyerandom,
Lucky you! I took physical science freshman year and I never learned a thing.

@koalabears23,
Done! That one was easy. Razz

I got an answer with 4 digits, with the digits adding up to 19.

Okay, where is everyone? This Lenny came out an hour ago - I just got home, solved in 2 minutes and find everyone complaining it is too hard? (Addendum: My computer crashed before I could send this, so now it's been out for over 3 hours.)

The Kookith is shot horizontally out the window at 20 m/s. So it will go 20 meters horizontally each second until it hits the ground. Now all we have to do is figure out how long it will take it to hit the ground. To do that, we can just treat it like we are dropping it out the window - doesn't matter how fast it is going sideways (ignoring curvature of the Earth, of course).

Ignoring the effects of air resistance, heavy and light objects all fall at the same rate due to gravity, so the mass of the Kookith is irrelevant. The formula is:
height = (1/2) gt^2 + vt + h,
where g is the acceleration due to gravity (-9.8 m/s, negative since it is downward), v is the initial vertical velocity (0 in this this case) and h is the initial height (45 m off the ground).

So if the ground is considered zero height, then when it hits the ground, we need:
0 = -4.9 (t^2) + 45 or t = square root of (45/4.9).

Multiply t by 20 to get the answer and convert to centimeters from meters to submit it.

Felineforever, I get a sum of only 13.

@lennyfan,
it got out very late last night and i couldn't wait Sad shame though, as this is the type of puzzles i prefer.
anyway, i also confirm: the sum of digits is 13

Just saw this nifty board when I was looking for the solutions to old ones. I was super excited at this week's - I'm decent at anagrams, but not crazy word-deciphering things, plus I'm an engineering student. Also got sum of 13.

Wooow, that A level in Maths really paid off!
Despite absolutely hating mechanics in maths, I must say that this would have been a gift of a qeustion on my exam paper LOL
Couldn't get on to neo for the last couple of days though, so only submitted today :/

@Rubyx,
looks like i used a different equation then you guys... i used

distance = vt + 1/2at^2

Sum of digits was 13 for me as well =D
Used the equation : dy = vyt + 1/2at^2
Then dx=vx*t
