I've figured it out but now I can't tell if we add EACH number together (9 +2+7 ect.), or to add each pair of numbers (9 + 27 +...ect). Any help would be appreciated!

It is a sequence of 1 to 3 digit numbers. I'm pretty sure you add them as numbers and not as digits.
my answer is 3 digits totalling 20
