I got 1545 (assuming its ok to post now that it's almost over). I was a little late being that I didn't have computer access most of the week (again). Anyways...

I took the surface area x the .08 for the outer steel then added that to the volume of a little steel ball (x50) for the total volume of the steel than multiplied by the 490. I then took the volume of the large sphere (assuming diameter was the 41, forgot to include the .08 for the volume) and subtracted the volume of the small spheres. This was my volume for the water which was then multiplied by the 62.4. I then added those 2 totals and rounded and got 1545.

I've been out of school a number of years and have had a hard time with these math ones (even googling the formulas). I was really good in math in hs, but as they say you don't use it, you lose it.... I can only assume I went about this the right way.

I hope tomorow's isn 't another math one -- i'll cry

You can't take the surface area * 0.8 because it is the volume between nested spheres, not a flat piece of steel with a particular thickness. Easy mistake to make - I did it on a puzzle not too long ago. Anyway, you have to calculate the volume of the outer sphere and then one with a radius 0.8 in less. To get the volume of steel, you subtract the smaller volume from the larger one. Then add the 50 small spheres, of course.

LennyFan is better at me than typing out solutions like this one, with equations and all, so i'll let him do the final version.
but the method has been given already:
The diameter given is from the outside surfaces of the large sphere. You find the volume of this sphere, and subtract the volume of a sphere which has a radius 0.8in smaller ==> amount of metal in the large sphere.
Then, find the volume of the 50 small sphere (using a 1" radius -- not the 2" diameter). Subtract this from the volume of the inner large sphere to get the volume of the water.
Convert in^3 to ft^3, and multiply by the given densities. Add it up, and you're done.
