Because when I looked at it I saw three intersecting identical shapes, but didn't see the arrangement you are describing. I used two triangles plus four curved shapes to get the area of the football and one triangle plus three curved shapes to get the area of the center section, never noticing that all the triangles and all the curved shapes were the same. (Bangs head on table.)
So I solved it with 3 (2 triangles + 4 curves) - 2 (1 triangle + 3 curves) = 4 triangles + 6 curves, so I should have come up with at least the same numerical answer as you, just with lots more calculation.
