NEW LENNY:

With the success of her party last week, Ember the Fire Faerie threw another, larger party this week, where exactly ten of every Neopet species was invited. Again, Ember ordered pizzas from Pizzaroo.

Pizzaroo now carries three sizes of pizza: The 22-inch-diameter pizzas are 995 Neopoints each, the 16-inch-diameter pizzas are 525 Neopoints each, and the 12-inch-diameter pizzas are 299 Neopoints each. Assuming that everyone in attendance will eat, on average, 70 square inches of pizza, what is the minimum number of Neopoints that Ember needs to feed everyone? Remember that only whole pizzas can be purchased, and assume that Ember will be joining her invited guests in eating pizza.

Please enter only a number. For example, if you calculated the answer to be 12000 Neopoints, you would submit only the number 12000.

@mellsie,
I was wrong last week, so I probably will mess it up again this week, lol. Will give it a go. I'm sorry to see jjbuttcrack has gone into lurk mode. Thanks for the hints in the past Smile

So, almost the same problem as last week, with more possibilities, ten of each species instead of three and Ember is eating

To help people avoid some of the most common mistakes, the area of a circle is PI * R * R, where R is the radius of the pizza.

Second, it isn't as simple as figuring out which of the pizzas is the cheapest per square inch and buying just those. Buying a combination may be cheaper. For example, suppose you need 10 square inches. You can buy 3 square inches for 3 NP and 4 square inches for 5 NP. Then the 3 square inches only cost 1 NP/sq in, while the 4 square inches cost 1.25 NP/sq in. So you might try buying only the 3 sq in units. However, you would need 4 of them to total 12 sq in, costing 12 NP, to get at least 10 sq in. Instead, you could buy 2 of the 3 square inch for 6 NP plus 1 of the 4 square inch for 5 NP and spend only 11 NP to get your 10 sq in.

I get the 16-inch pizza being the cheapest per square inch, so I would expect to buy the most of those.

Did anyone get an answer that starts with a 9?

@grumpygina,
Haven't been here for a while... Just dropped by to check my answer, which I submitted about 10 minutes or so after Lenny came up, and from skimming through posts, it looks like it's no longer customary to post actual answers here on the forum...

So, here's a way to compare: the sum of digits of a number I submitted is 33 (so for example, if answer was 12345, it would've been 1+2+3+4+5=15). Anyone else can confirm?

Ok, so, wait. A = Area, D = Diameter, R = Radius, P = Pi. Is this right?

D / 2 = R x P x R x R = A?

@tutors,
Quote:
D / 2 = R x P x R x R = A?

Remove the x between the first R and the P and split it into two different equations.

@lem,
I agree with the sum of 33.

@lennyfan,
D / 2 = R
R x P x R x R
correct?
so, for instance,
16(D) / 2 = 8(R)
8 x 3.14(P) = 25.12
25.12 x 8 = 200.96
200.96 x 8 = 1607.68
(did i even do that right?

@lem,
My answer (which I'm sure is wrong) would add up to 44. I guess I had better figure out what I am doing wrong.
Thank you for helping!

you are multiplying by the radius 3 times -- you should only use it twice.

@jjbuttcrack,
isnt it just that i multiply the rad by pi and then that by the rad twice?

ohh, i get it, its as if pi is first
so, like, pi x rad^2?

@grumpygina,
... unless you're the one who got it right, of course.

I was trying for that elusive gold trophy, so I had to work fast and with very little re-checking. I had my spreadsheet that I used to solve last week's Lenny via brute force (and got a correct answer, and even made first 250 despite submitting much later that night), which I modified to add third possible pie. Hopefully I got it right though...

In any case, you're welcome Smile
