I know this kinda sounds stupid, but can a square have a diameter? I'm assuming that the pizzas are circular, but there can be square pizzas.

@starleogirl09,
I have never heard of a square having a diameter. It has a diagonal though.

@edstock,
Well your use of spreadsheet puzzled me and just did my own and came to the same result that simple logic got me.

there is a logical argument that can be used to prove that that particular answer is the best without looking at all possible results.

@spongeee,
No calculus, it is a linear programming problem. You need to find a minimum cost subject to the constraint that the total area of the pizzas is at least a certain value.

@krazykatana,
If you can present that simple argument without giving away the answer, I would love to hear it. I don't remember my linear programming techniques well enough to apply them, which is why I used the spreadsheet to test the possible answers.

I have to confess though, I made a mistake the first time through and it was more like 160 rows than 40 when I changed it.

I was wondering if maybe you could clarify on some things for me please? Do you need to figure out the price for 1 square inch of pizza? I know the Area of both the pizzas, and I calculated it out that they both have approximately the same price per square inch of pizza. Do I need to keep it specific or can I round it to the nearest hundredth?

@omgzarrr,
kept it specific personally, I think you can round safelly after a few digits as we are looking for whole pizzas so as long as the difference in your sums is not significative compared to the size of a whole pizza it has basically no influence.

But keep it exact as much as possible, it's much safer.

@omgzarrr,
Not sure. I didn't use the price per square inch directly in any of my calculations.

As for price per square inch, I used it but only as a comparative, it is not part of any of my calculation.

@edstock,
54 x 70 = 3780 inch needed

16 inch pizza = (3.14)16x16 = 803.84 (525np)
so price per inch = 1.5311

12 = 452.16 (299)
price .66
this one is cheaper

so 3780 needed / 452.16
you need 9
so the cost is 2691?

@omgzarrr,
no, and if you have a 1 as your first digit either you or I have probably read the question wrong or didn't correctly take note of some of the datas given in the problem as anything with a 1 as first digit is miles away form any possible answers my spreadsheet gives me.
