I have an idea. I notice the first three terms can be expressed as

7 - 2^2, 13 - 2^3, 31 - 2^4

But the next number is even, which is not consistent with the pattern of a prime minus a power of 2.

@K311Y,
haha .. i guess it kinda makes sense. when i looked at it, i saw a pattern. when you explained it. i didnt see your pattern.

3, 5, 15, 16, 38, 26, 29, 41,...

38-3 = 35 = 7*5
26-5 = 21 = 7*3
29-15 = 14 = 7*2
41 - 16 = 25 = 5*5
** -38 = 15 = 5*3
**-26 = 10 = 5*2
-- * -- = ****

i posted this on a separate site. mixed reviews about it

@K311Y,
You might want to try each step horizontally

@WongTon993,
wait, I don't understand what the multiples have to do with anything

@omgitsalibobali,
its just a random thing. i can start wherever i want. its just when i started there, the pattern is stable/constant.

@WongTon993,
But I mean like, how do you get the final answer? What is your username?

@Firestar624,
Ooh WongTon...I like your pattern better.

Basically I separated the 10 number sequence into 2 groups of 5.

1st group 2nd group
3, 5 Difference is 2 26, 29 Difference is 3 2, 3 diff =1
5, 15 Difference is 10 29, 41 Difference is 12 10, 12 diff=2
15, 16 Difference is 1 41, X Difference should be 4 1, 4 diff=3
16, 38 Difference is 22 X, X Difference should be 26 22, 26 diff=4

Can someone please explain how to get the answer out of this theory. My brain hurts. *stupid 13 years old education*

@K311Y,
as i said on the other site, if this sequence is supposed to continue, then iono how mine works. i still have faith in this theory, which i didnt submit, but i think this sequence is something with on the site. maybe somebody would like to step up an give a hint or two?

@K311Y,
But even though you know the difference, we wouldn't know if it was higher or lower than the number before.

So for 41 is could be 37 or 45

But I can't be positive that's how it works... im confused now

I think I find it, thanks to the hint of “Infinite Sequence” given by someone on previous pages.
Don't forget there is one “Infinite Sequence” often used by LC.....

@Firestar624,
I like your theory Kelly, although it's not an "infinite arithmetic sequence" as said on the neoboards.

I don't think the 1,2,3 & 4 differences could go either way.

@Firestar624,
I know...my theory is a long shot, but if you look at the 10 number sequence in 2 groups of 5, split down the middle, the numbers ascend in each of the 2 groups.

Differences in the 2 groups of numbers are as follow:

2, 10, 1, 22
3, 12, X, Y
__________
1, 2, 3, 4, Are the differences of the differences...3 and 4 are my guesses...So that would make X=4 and Y=26. 41+4=45, 45+26=71.

@puzzle,
Isn't an infinite sequence just a sequence that never ends? How does that give an answer?
