LOL! To the people that are answering something that would actually make since. (i.e. celery and vegetables) TnT said there is a pattern. And therefore, you have to find the pattern. It is most likely that the final answer won't make sense. (John was very skinny. Perhaps it was because he only ate _tuna_.)

First thing I came up with to unscramble the missing letters, as well, but given that the LC says What is the missing word?, with word being singular, I'm inclined to go with the answer that is only a single word. I like it that that answer is something you can eat, as it fits nicely in the sentence, although I don't believe there is anything in the problem that requires that it necessarily be a food. I certainly don't see anything in the statement of the riddle that requires that it be a Neopian item or a vegetable as some people were saying. I think the vegetable idea only came up because they have fewer calories than a lot of other foods. I would tend to discard the leek idea because it doesn't use anything about the pairs of sentences. (The last letters of the first sentences give you OONGY and the first letters give you NWIMJ. Those would be the most sensible places to find a corresponding word in the first sentence and neither one makes sense.) I would mention, if you want to use leek, then you really need to continue the pattern in the last sentence, so you definitely need to say leeks plural instead of leek singular.

Hi! It's my first time on here so I don't know if I'm being stupid but dont the last letters of eachline spell a word. Or is that too simple?

@shinymetal,
#3 wouldn't be bullseye, but Faerie Bubbles. Look at the main image. Not the proper word, but it still matches the description.
#4 woudn't be the Avatar collector, since it's a yellow star, not orange.

I also noticed the fragments have the following number of letters each:
32
30
28
31
and the fragment missing the word has 28 letters in it.
Of course that seems silly since it's suggesting that it's a 1 letter word!
maybe someone else can see a different pattern!
also note:
32 -2=
30-2=
28+3=
31 so maybe +3=
34? that gives you a six letter word.

Other theroy comments
Tuna- also spells "a nut" (which it can't be) and "aunt"
also why not combine the tuskaniny and leek theroies and throw an "s" into the mix for the scramble: anuts

Just throwing out my food for thought
