That is the number that makes the equation true. However, the previous statements use the "placeholder" numbers instead. I think you need to change the numbers to the letters that represent them, and then into placeholder numbers.
yeah -- i agree with you up to there.
all i'm saying is that you need to convert the final answer backwards, so that it matches with the final equation given in the problem.

@Unitynow8,
I apologize if this is a stupid question, but why do you even need to use letters at all to solve this puzzle? Can't you just directly substitute number for number without the extra step of substituting with letters?
I agree, I think you need to change the numbers back. Thanks for the clues, everyone!

the answer is the 4******9, i think. 1******8 satisfies mathematically but the question itself is coded, so the answer should be coded as well...thanks everyone!

How do u get 4******9?
And what do u mean by coded
you got 1******8, right, then you take that back into the code backwards: if you take 4, put it into the cipher and get back maybe a G, which is the 7th letter in the code. That's your number. and no, G is not = to 4
but even if you dont uncode it, when you multiply, it is 10398206 not 1******8 or whatever......

@confounded,
I think, you don't need abc, just 123, like a=1, you really dont need letters, although, uncoded(How do you get it coded?) I got 1**7***8

@blacksuzaku,

For the final equation, you don't have a solution. So you alter the code according to the key, and get a proper answer. Then you back-substitute it into the scrambled pattern and submit your coded answer.
What do you mean by back substituting? Does it have anything to do with adding in anyway? LOST!!! O_O
