@K311Y,
I multiplied the surface area by the thickness of the frosting. (:

@eitsuop,
Okay thats what I did too. Smile **sigh** I wish that when they gave the lenny answer every week, they showed their work. lol

@eitsuop,

I thought you DID frost the top of each layer.

"Each tier was frosted on the top and sides"

I think people are mixing up tier and layer. Each tier (not layer) is frosted on the top and sides.

Quote:
No, the layers of cake are 12, 10.5, and 9. You have to add the icing onto that.

According to the puzzle, "The first tier had a total diameter of 12 inches, the second had a total diameter of 10.5 inches, and the third had a total diameter of 9 inches."

Since they say"total" diameter, I'm pretty sure that has to include the 1/3 inch of frosting on each side, so the cake layer diameters are 2/3 inch less than the tier diameters.

Quote:
2(pi r 2) + (2 pi r)* h

I used that formula for calculating the surface area for the frosting but since I figured we werent frosting the bottom of each layer, I used (pi r 2) + (2 pi r)* h instead.

I agree with the revised formula for the surface area, but unfortunately, you can't just multiply that times 1/3 to get the volume. The problem is that the inner surface of the frosting cylinder is smaller than the outer surface.

The approach I took is to calculate the area of the annular ring by subtracting the area of the inner circle from the area of the outer circle, then multiplying by the height.

Area of outer circle (Ao) = pi * r^2
Area of inner circle (Ai) = pi * (r - 1/3)^2
Height (H) = 3 * layer height + 2 * jam height

Volume of cylinder = (Ao - Ai) * H

Hi, I'm just wondering why we need to compute for surface area.

Each tier is a cylinder inside another cylinder. The volume of the inner cylinder consists of the cake layers and the jam. To get the volume of the frosting, we only need to subtract the volume of the inner cylinder from the total volume of the outer cylinder (which includes the cake, the jam, and the frosting).

We know that the height of each layer of cake is 1.5 and that the height of the jam is 0.25. The height of the tier is 3*1.5 (cake) + 2*0.25 (jam) + 1/3 (the frosting). The diameter of the tier is 12, 10.5, or 9.

@edstock,
How do you know how thick the cylinder is?

@Patsgril,
They tell us the frosting is 1/3 inch thick, so that is the thickness of the frosting cylinder I'm calculating. I like the idea in the post above, however, where you just calculate the volumes of the solid cylinders and subtract.

@edstock,
i think i have the soluce but i'm not sure (i may not understood very well the question with my stupid french brain XD) :

Cylinder : pi/4 * diam² * h
Empty cylinder : pi/4 * (diam1 ² - diam2²) * h
And diam 1 is the extern & diam 2 is the intern

cakes h = 1.5 and density = .35
jam h= .25 and density = .60
frosting h= 1/3and density = .48

1)Base Diam : 12 for the total so for the inside it's 12-1/3 (it's without the frosting)
Cake : pi/4 x (12-1/3)² x 1.5 = 160.352
Jam : pi/4*(12-1/3)² * 0.25 = 26.725
Frosting top : pi/4 * ( 12² - (10.5)²)*(1/3) = 8.836
Side : pi/4 * ( 12² - (12-1/3)²)*(1.5*3+0.25*2) = 30.979

2) Middle Diam : 10.5 for the total so for the inside it's 10.5 -1/3 (it's without the frosting)
Cake : pi/4 x (10.5-1/3)² x 1.5 = 121.769
Jam : pi/4*(10.5-1/3)² * 0.25 = 20.295
Frosting top : pi/4 * ( 10.5² - (9)²)*(1/3) =7.658
Side : pi/4 * ( 10.5² - (10.5-1/3)²)*(1.5*3+0.25*2) = 27.053

3)Top Diam : 9 for the total so for the inside it's 9-1/3 (it's without the frosting)
Cake : pi/4 x (9-1/3)² x 1.5 = pi*8.666²*1.5/4 = 88.488
Jam : pi/4*(9-1/3)² * 0.25 = 14.748
Frosting top : pi/4 *(9)² * 1/3 = 21.206
Side : pi/4 * ( 9² - (9-1/3)²)*(1.5*3+0.25*2) = 23.126

Total cakes :
Volume : Base (160.352 * 3) + Middle (121.769* 3) + Top (88.488*3) = 1111.827
Onces : 0.35* 1111.827 = 389.139

Total jam :
Volume : Base (26.725*2) + Middle (20.295*2) + Top (14.748 *2) =123.536
Onces : 0.60 * 123.536 = 74.121

Total frosting :
Vomue : Base (8.836 +30.979) + Middle (7.658+27.053) + top (21.206+23.126) = 118.858
Onces : 0.48 *118.858 = 57.052

All birthday cakes :
Onces : cake (389.139) + jam (74.121) + frosting (57.052) = 520.313
Calories : 520.313 *53.4 =27784.661

Maybe i'm wrong but i don't see where ^^"

@Dandy Warhols,
Inner diameter needs to have frosting subtracted from both sides, so it would be 12 - 2/3, 10.5 - 2/3 and 9 - 2/3.

Damn TT_TT
I though "rayon" and not "diameter" when I did the calculs. I am so stupid TT_TT

What do you mean by Inner Diameter. I thought the cake was solid.

@edstock,
It bugs me when they do something like it has a "total of". That means my answer was wrong

The cake is solid, but there is a layer of frosting all around the sides. The diameters of the cake with the frosting are given as 12, 10.5 and 9 inches. I've been referring to that as the outer diameter. The actually diameters of the cake pieces and jam layers are 2/3 inches less than each of those diameters, and I've been calling those values the inner diameters.

@edstock,
While walking through the Tyrannian Plateau one warm and sunny day (but really, are there any other days on the Tyrannian Plateau?), you stumbled across several Tyrannian JubJubs enjoying the sunny day.

When approached, the first JubJub shouted "Ra!" In response, the second JubJub shouted "Shah!" and the third and fourth replied with "Roo!" and "Ee!"

What did the fifth JubJub say? Please submit only a single word with no other information or punctuation.

I'm not too sure, but I think that it may have to do with Egyptian symbols, or the alphabet, like the pronunciations.

@edstock,
Do you find the new one ?
I may have found a possible solution but, well I have to be realist, I am not good at this game -_-" so I can just have wrong.
I'm so upset with myself for the calories. I'm so stupid to take off just 1/3 to the diameter for the frosting. Arrgh !! (it's not the answer I have found, it's just the expression of my anger)

I searched rah shah roo ee on google, and the first result was the neopets pronunciation page. Basically, it's the last syllable of each neopet's name in order.
Acara - a-cah-rah
Aisha - aye-shah
Bloomaroo - blue-mah-roo
Bori - bo-ree

So logically next would be Bruce - brooce

@halcyonmelody,
Aw, don't just give away the answer - let people work at it a little.

I was going to say: Googled, found a Neopets page as the top link, submitted my answer.

@Dandy Warhols,
Ok, it has to do with Neopet pronunciations.

http://www.neopets.com/pronounce.phtml

Check out the last syllable of the first 4 pets.
