this ones hard...im thinking 48 minutes though...

This is a classic crossing problem. I've seen variations of it many times. The key here is not to fall for having a fastest pet walk a slow one then return. Because two slowest times add-up, but if two slowest ones walk together that time is used only once, even though the 8m pet has to make one crossing back, because of the time saved by walking two slow ones together it is still going to be faster that way.

a=4 mins
b=8 mins
c=16mins
d=20mins

a+b = 8 mins
b back = 8 mins
c+d = 20 mins
a back = 4 mins
a + b = 8mins

TOTAL 48 mins

You can get 52 by shuttling everyone with the Gelert (4 minutes)

i.e.

to 4+8 = 8
from 4 = 12
to 4+16 = 28
from 4 = 32
to 4+20 = 52

But the 48 minute solution is faster and the best one I can come up with as well. You definately want the Grundo & Gnorbu (20 & 16 minutes) to cross together.

Hmmm...I see, by putting everyone with the slowest pet, you would get the fastest, but still, I have a feeling it wouldn't be that easy.

it's round number 176 and the text is

"A Grundo, a Gnorbu, a Gelert, and a Grarrl need to walk from Sakhmet to Qasala during a really bad heat wave. The heat is so bad, it's not possible to cross the open desert without some sort of shade. Fortunately, they have one umbrella. Unfortunately, however, only a maximum of two pets at a time can fit under the umbrella. The Grundo can cross the desert alone in 20 minutes. The Gnorbu can make the crossing alone in 16 minutes. The Grarrl can make the crossing alone in 8 minutes. And the Gelert can make the crossing in 4 minutes. Note that when two pets are making the crossing, they must do so at the pace of the slower pet!

think we already have the answer of 48minutes being the fastest time possible though. so ya ain't needed in this one stapel ...
