Trip to Meridell

Reply Thu 30 Dec, 2004 10:18 am
An Acara traveled from Meridell to Brightvale, 50 miles away, with his pet Pawkeet. When he arrived in Brightvale, he let the pawkeet fly free while he traveled back to Meridell, at a speed of 10 miles per hour. The pawkeet, who flies at 25 miles per hour, arrived at Meridell and promptly turned around until he got to the Acara. Once he got to the Acara, he turned around and returned to Meridell. He continued to fly back and forth between the Acara and Meridell until the Acara reached Meridell.

How many miles total did the Pawkeet travel on this trip?

acara traveled back at a speed of 10 mph

so he took 5 hours

while traveling back the Pawkeet was in a continuous movement at a speed of 25mph

so in 5 hours it traveled 5*25=125 miles

125+50 miles at first from Meridell to Brightvale =175 miles

So we have to assume the silly bird just stopped half-way home on the last trip?

I'd say 200 miles, assuming the bird goes all the way home instead of just deciding to live half-way.

The bird makes it all the way back the way the problem is worded. He keeps flying back and forth between home and the guy who is headed home. When the guy reaches home, the bird is there as well. The bird is not flying back and forth between the two cities.

Someone help...i cant figure this one out i tried for like 2 hrs and couldnt get it...im not sure but i think the ratio 2.5/1 helps out...the problem i had is that the Acara keeps moving so you have to find a midpoint for them to meet, which i have not figured out how to do yet, if anyone figures this out PLEASE let me know...my username on Neopets is Tcacswimboy Thank you!

I think I've figured it out. Took a while, though.

First, I calculated the distance that the pawkeet travelled before leaving Meridell for the second time:
50 + 50 = 100: Meridell to Brightvale; Brightvale to Meridell

Next, I calculated that the Acara and his pawkeet meet after about 2 hours, 8 minutes, 35 seconds after they initially departed from Brightvale. At this point, the Acara is approximetly 28.569 miles from Meridell, and the Pawkeet is approximetly 28.576 miles from Meridell. Notice that I rounded up on the former and (against normal rules) rounded down on the pawkeet. Finally:
28.57 + 28.57 = 57.152777777777.....

And I combine my two figures:
57.1527777777..... + 100 = 157.1527777777.....

Thus, the pawkeet travelled about 157.15 miles on this trip.

Ok, how long does it take the owner to get back? 10mph -> 50miles = 5 hours. The bird is flying non stop for all this time. Thats 5 hrs of flight at 25mph. Thats 125miles.

To begin with the guy carried the bird 50miles, so how far did the bird travel in total?

Easy : 125miles + 50 miles = 175miles

I believe that this was confirmed on neopets. Please note that there is now a new forum for you to make your neopets posts in!

That sounds right to me. I really dislike riddles that have incredibly simple answers (such as this one).

I was sure I had the correct answer, but then I realized earlier today that I had made a mistake: I had made it so that the Pawkeet had returned to Meridell within one hour, when it should have taken two. That makes my first post pretty much useless.
