No argument from me on that, timber.

Regarding your earlier post, I took it as "proper chest thumping" from you at the time, which did not bother me in the least. You did not make it clear that you were "expressing your distaste," and it was not evident to me. Vagaries of language perhaps?

None of this stuff gave you a hint that I wasnt appreciating it much?

Well, I s'pose it's for a good cause ... but for some proper chest-thumping, dont look no further than the front pages of the Dutch newspapers today ... [..] as you can see, the Telegraaf just suffices with splashing the amount in coloured bold front across the front page.

Note also the subheadlines ... the AD one says, "Holland in the flush of charity", the Telegraaf one even, "Holland outdoes itself" ... oh yeah ... and this be the same newspaper that railes against the excess of development aid every year ... (sorry if I'm sounding bitter).

<Tells himself: as long as it helps the Asians ... its for a good cause ..>

Mind you, these two newspapers are, besides the two best selling newspapers, also the two least ... high-brow newspapers.

I was impressed by the amount that was collected ... I was less than impressed (slightly sickened would be the words) by our populist newspapers' apparent need to jingo themselves into a frenzy about it ... yuck. If anything, that post was meant kind of apologetically, as in: "well I gotta admit we have plenty of that kind of stupidity to go around here as well, as you can see."

I don't think the Scandinavians feel the need to do that kind of thing ... and they give even more. <shakes head>

Maybe a "hint" if I was trying to decipher what you were saying. I wasn't. Had you gone ahead and said, "well I gotta admit we have plenty of that kind of stupidity to go around here as well, as you can see," I would have better understood what you were trying to convey.

But if you are going to continue with the sweeping generalizations ("I don't think the Scandinavians feel the need to do that kind of thing") we may never end this discussion. Obviously those sorts of broad strokes aren't accurate, whichever of us is making them.
